Dual Graded race success for Capricorn Stud

By: Tippu Sultan   January 4 , 2009

The Capricorn Stud Farm has been steadily making inroads into big league. The horses from Capricorn Stud have proved to be value for money for buyers. The committed team at the stud farm has done a great job under the guidance of Berjis Desai and has been lately making its presence felt in the classics after the up gradation of its stock in recent years through purchase of quality mares and exciting stallion prospects. While Attractress won her second classic of the season on Sunday winning the Oaks in pretty impressive fashion after bolting rider less one full round before being stalled and yet having enough stamina to make her presence felt in the grueling mile and half trip, first season runner Miss Everywhere who won the Gr 3 Byerly Turk Stakes gave a good advertisement to the stud farm`s new stallion Mull of Kintyre. Miss Everywhere is of course a got abroad. The stud farm procured Mull of Kintyre as its stallion and he has already had one covering. Surely things are picking up for the Pune based Capricorn Stud Farm which is a good sign because slowly the smaller stud farms are set to pose a serious challenge to the established stud farms who need to pull up as at present their crop does not offer value to the price that is paid for its crop.

While Capricorn Stud Farm had reason to celebrate its success, for sporting owners D Pratap Chander Reddy and Vijay Kumar Gupta, the dual classic success was indeed been very heartening. Pratap Reddy is an enthusiastic buyer who has a great interest in pedigree and generally attempts to look to buy horses whose pedigree catches his fancy. He takes great relish buying more than the joy of leading in his winners and as such, he is rarely seen at the race course. Because of the good quality horses that he buys in partnership with Vijay Kumar, a textile man who also sponsors the Golconda Derby, these horses are always making their presence felt in classics even if they are not winning all of them. When success comes in the way of sporting owners like these, it also is an additional cause for celebration.

Be that as it may, Attractress went into the Oaks as an overwhelming favourite as she had proved herself to be a cut above the rest. There was a scare for the connections of Attractress as the highly strung filly played up on way to gates and bolted rider less despite which she was loaded into the gate. But in the race itself, Attractress ran a well settled race, sitting well of the pace before stepping up the ante with an electrifying run in the final furlong to get the measure of front-running Clever Ploy to win capably. Star Senora ran on to finish third.
Spot On and Zycon led the 13-horse field as the starter dispatched the field for the six furlong trip, with Miss Everywhere settled in about the sixth or seventh position. Spot assumed command on turning for home and had a useful lead but Miss Everywhere gradually covered up the leeway and then went past the front-runner in the shadow of the winning post. Chiquelle ran on to finish a close third.

After traveling a handy second till the 800 metres marker, Mission Chief shot into the lead in the 2200 metres A S Krishna Memorial Cup, a Category I race, and then skipped away from the opposition to win comfortably from Hynotiq who covered some good ground from the rear position to finish second. Gentleman`s Deal continued to disappoint his supporters with yet another dismal performance. Fly By Wire too was a let down.

After a series of load shedding runs, Irish Intellect displayed his true form with a start to finish mission in the 1400 metres Salarjung Cup. Indian Storm closed with a rush to finish second though he never threatened to pose a stiff hurdle to the eventual winner. Favourite Temple Bells was third but the five-year old mare never raised a fluent gallop to make an impact on the result.

Manduro`s powerful finish ensured a narrow victory for this four-year old gelding. Vijaysena shot into the lead inside the final furlong but his dwindling reserves ensured that Manduro`s finishing burst was going to produce dividends. Manduro, despite veering in from wide outside, managed to neck out the front-runner over the grueling 2400 metres trip.

Monochrome got the measure of front-running Kohinoor Magic and Lucrative in the homestretch to win capably the six furlongs Starsky Plate. Lucrative held on for the runner up berth.

Favourite Belle Dancer readily justified the favouritism in the Summer Snow Plate (Div I), a race for first season runners, over a scurry with a start to finish effort, staving off the challenge of Kings Cruise. In the lower division of the race, rank outsider Al Fatha inflicted misery on punters by gradually wearing down the front-running Pythagoras close home after engaging the fancied runner in a stiff duel in the final furlong.
