Long Shots Run the Show, Punters Run for Cover Sunday’s Mumbai card was a lesson in betting humility. Logic took the day off while long shots had their moment. Favourites flattered, form went missing and ignored horses stole the show. Punters were reminded, yet again, that racing does not answer to the market or respect reputations. For a sport short on confidence, the results delivered plenty of irony and very little certainty.

In contrast, Southern India’s response has been one of administrative paralysis. By imposing blanket shutdowns on entire jurisdictions rather than isolating infected stables, authorities have penalized healthy yards and devastated the sport’s economy. The lesson is clear: Glanders requires scientific management and institutional courage, not the blunt instrument of indiscriminate fear.

The suspension of racing in parts of southern India has been justified as a matter of strict compliance with the National Action Plan for Control and Eradication of Glanders (Revised 2025). A close reading of the document, however, suggests that the current response goes beyond what the Action Plan actually prescribes.
