HRC Stewards show firm resolve

By: Tippu Sultan   February 22 , 2010

The Hyderabad Race Club Stewards showed firm resolve in the face of a daunting situation which threatened to go out of hand. They did not panic like the BTC authorities who declared the race void for purpose of betting on Saturday as the jockey of the favourite was unseated soon after the start. Pradeep Chouhan, who was guiding the fortunes of favourite Vijaysiddanth, was thrown off his mount soon after the start due to an accident caused by Danzsingh and the race was won by rank outsider Silver Rose.

Hell broke lose as punters demanded that the race be declared null and void and vandalized the premises by breaking the TV monitors and hurling chairs. The authorities were quick to summon the police to handle the situation and ordered an enquiry into the running of the race. They suspended apprentice jockey A R Gaikwad and jockey Ch K Chary with immediate effect for careless riding which led to the mishap and allowed the result to stay. The Stewards came to the right decision that since the mishap was an accident, there was no need to interfere with the result just because the favourite had lost due to a mishap. Apart from suspending the jockeys concerned, they ordered for a detailed enquiry to be held later. For the record, both Chouhan and Gawade escaped with minor bruises though the accident looked pretty bad to the eye. The horses involved in the mishap too did not suffer serious injuries.

Dancing Touch (A Ashhad Asbar up), winner of the Sri.S.Ramakrishnam Raju Memorial Cup, being led in by trainer Mr. K S V Prasad Raju & Dr.Syed Ainuddin Arif
Vijaysiddanath was backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the 2400 metres Royal Prince Plate. The favourite who was drawn one, was in the rear group hugging the rails. Danzsingh who was slightly sluggish quickly improved and joined the pack and raced on the outside of the favourite but apprentice jockey Gawade perhaps tried to poke through when there was insufficient gap and clipped the front runner. Both the jockey and the horse fell on Vijaysiddanth causing jockey Pradeep Chouhan to be thrown out from his saddle. The jockey fell on the outside of the outer rails and the favourite raced riderless on the outside of the track as the rails broke due to impact. Danzsingh ran riderless with the field but luckily he did not hamper any of the runners.

Royal Scotsman led the field into the straight but weakened. Apprentice Harinder Singh pushed Silver Rose to take charge and the progeny of Razeen, despite veering out form a straight course, had enough reserves to win from a late rallying Secret Asset and Maximum City.

Unfortunately, jockey Ramana had a bad fall two races later as his horse Young Cavalier who trailed the field, broke down, causing the jockey to be thrown off. The jockey appeared to have landed on his head and he was unconscious soon after the fall. He was rushed to the hospital and he is said to be out of danger. Incidentally, the race was run in memory of Apprentice jockey A Pramod Goud who had become a fatal victim of a fall a year ago. Hunting Bay tracked Dancing Harbour into the straight in the upper division of the race and sped away after turning for home to record a decisive win. Dhrutiman picked up the rest of the runners but did not have enough fire power to overhaul the front runner. Rising Rays flashed home with a brilliant burst in the final furlong to edge past Sahebzadi and Tillcowscomehome and recorded a win at nourishing odds in the lower division of the race.

Dancing Touch appears to have struck amazing form. The five year old gelding who used to run freely in front and pack up in the closing stages of the race, has been seen in different light this season. After being allowed to settle, the progeny of Duja seems to have come into his own. Dancing Touch recorded the fourth win of this season when he came from behind to sail past the front running Spot On and recorded a comfortable win over Arrow of Light and Greek Fire who was late on the scene. Spot On led the field from the start, with Come Together battling with her till the straight. The former packed up inside the final furlong and went out of reckoning without putting any resistance. Possibly, Spot On who has won most of her races over seven furlongs, found the speedy sprinters to her discomfort.

After running a series of seconds, Chestnut Charmer seems to have struck purple patch in the hands of apprentice Venkat. Chestnut Charmer was taken on a start to finish mission and the Vittal Deshumukh`s trainee held off the late bid of Green Haven to record his second consecutive win in the Shri Narsingh Raj Memorial Cup. . Favourite Aphrodisiac did not reproduce the form that he had shown earlier in the season and faded out form the scene from a prominent position. Scubarioo ran on from behind to finish third.

Favourite Youre An Aeton held off the spirited bid of Jabel Queen who tried to overhaul the front runner with a flourishing run from behind to win Mother`s Boy Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Juliet was well placed to strike but went out of reckoning with a furlong out.

The odds drifted dramatically on favourite Traxana and true to market expectation, the fancied runner was not sighted in the Republic Plate (Div I). Lesser fancied Fleeting Wish led all the way and won with a measure of comfort from Dartos The Msucle who put in a noteworthy effort from way off the pace. Cabochon had no problem in disposing of his opponents in the lower division of the race winning by a widening margin of fourt lengths from Young Star.
