Kadam shines amid ruins

By: Goldie Boy   August 25 , 2010

Temptation, in the following event, the 1,800m Swatantrata Handicap, made no bones about her heavy impost of 62kg. The 6-4 favourite was ridden in a check behind Dazzling Win, Royal Scandal and Miracle Man, till the final turn before cruising into the lead to let Kadam open his day`s account.

Kadam reeled off his treble in successive events. Riding Javed`s Antares, a 10-1 shot, Kadam kept the horse up with pace, behind trainer Bharath Singh`s half-money favourite, Credit Ease, and pounced on the leader in the last 150m of the race to score a decisive victory. The favourite appeared to be tiring, past the distance post. As a result of this, Silken Dancer and Chantilly Lace also closed in on to the favourite who indicated that he may do better over longer sprints.

Kadam`s strong handling of Dynamic Move and his quick reflexes also helped him beat fancied runners like Vignet and Agnation. Vignet led from the start, with Agnation close on his heels while Special Gesture and Dynamic Move followed not very far away. As expected, Vignet started veering out, nearing the last furlong and Agnation paid the penalty for galloping close to the leader. Dynamic Move, who was directly behind Agnation, was quickly asked to switch-in, and pushed into the lead for a narrow victory.

Blazing Beauty and Torrential disputed the lead in the lower division of the trophy event. Iora, on the other hand, was held back in the company of Harey Putter. The short burst and the tiring frontrunner made the task of Iora easy in the final 150m of the race as the winner covered almost five lengths in the last 100 metres to win, albeit in a close finish from Italian Dream. However, Italian Dream was a good thing lost in view of poor jockeyship of Shaikh Israil. The jockey galloped the horse six-wide and took Italian Dream further out at the final turn to lose the race in a photo-finish.

Mirror Image won the upper division of the trophy and with authority. Jockey Salim, atop the 10-1 shot, sent the horse in to a commanding five length lead from the start of the race and won with lot to spare from Italian Star who made a late entry on the scene to keep his stablemate, Great Heart, at bay.

The victory of trainer Pesi Shroff`s red-hot favourite, Alize, was considered to be a formality in the 1,000m Zip Off Handicap. However, it never happened for two reasons. Firstly, the horse found the slated trip a wee too short to his liking, and secondly, the wide outside draw also contributed to the filly`s defeat. Kadam wasted a lot of time positioning the horse, and also hesitated taking the rail-side galloping room when making his final run, 150m from home while Flying Jaguar and Supreme Attraction were fighting out the issue. Supreme Attraction was a rank-outsider and the horse was also badly ridden. Jockey Gajender Singh galloped the horse six-wide all through the journey and still scored.
