Race goers left in the lurch

By: Sridhama   August 27 , 2010

Race goers were in for a rude shock as only two favourites obliged in the card of eight events that was gone through on Friday. Winner spotting was a difficult exercise as most races were dominated by lesser fancied runners. The victory of long shot Classical Dancer and that of On A Roll at the expense of overwhelming favourite Caspian Sea in both the divisions of the Star of Mysore Gold Cup, the feature event of the day, put the punters in great deal of discomfort. Only one lucky punter got his combination right and walked away with the jackpot. Trainer Lokanath recorded a double through Sparkling Cat and Classical Dancer.

Caspian Sea, who had run below par in both his outings at Bangalore during the summer season, was backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the Star of Mysore Gold Cup (Div I). Last start winner On A Roll had his share of supporters. Snob Value, who has this habit of winning one race during every Mysore main season as a long shot, led all the way and shaped to cause a big upset but On A Roll managed to overhaul him in the dying moments of the race. Caspian Sea never picked up speed and ran on to finish a tame third.

Classical Dancer won the lower division of the race with apprentice Adarsh on board. Traveling a handy second, Classical Dancer assumed command midway through the race and went away for an easy win. Classical Dancer had form on his side though the presence of Adarsh was a dissuading factor for the punters to opt for this Lokanath trainee. Royal Player found foot late while favourite Greens made no snow and finished a poor third.

The upper division of the Ullal Beach Plate for horses rated 40 to 65, turned out to be an interesting affair even before the race began. Astounding Gallop was withdrawn from the fray well before the odds opened. Cationic who shared favoritism with Inspired Move was withdrawn at the gates. Still Inspired Move who had recorded a hat-trick was available at good odds considering the depleted field. The tail fishing filly was very lethargic at the start and refused to raise a fluent gallop. Greenbro led from the start and held off the half hearted effort of First of a Legend.

A good gamble was brought out on Indian Bolt in the lower division of the Ullal Beach Plate. After winning a race in the lower class, Indian Bolt had fared poorly in his next outing in the higher class. There was no doubt that Indian Bolt is a better class horse and he ran to his potential as he easily beat the challenge of favourite Sweet Caroline.

In another race meant for horses rated 20 to 45, Flip Your Destiny wreaked havoc on the already battered punters. A rank outsider, Flip Your Destiny was in earnest, in hot pursuit of Sterling Speed from the start and managed to get the better of the front runner close home. Favourite Leading Lady let down her supporters with a poor effort while Thumping Victory impressed while finishing third.

Sparkling Cat who had run an easy third to A Move To Remember when last run duly obliged over a sprint. Coming from the widest draw, he was guided well by apprentice Naushad Alam. Despite traveling wide all the way, the apprentice put all at his command to see her through with the threat coming from Scarlet Knight who would have been better served with a stronger effort from the jockey.

Favourite Spark Of Galaxy won the opener in great comfort in a start to finish mission. The three year old filly gave jockey S John an armchair ride to victory.

The last race of the day threw punters in total disarray with a number of horses getting backed in turns. Expensive Affair who started as a favourite saw the odds drift out alarmingly. Expensive Affair however put in a serious effort in the race to get the measure of front running Del Gratia in the final strides of the race.
