Aristos wins feature in record time

By: Tippu Sultan   September 19 , 2010

Jaggy Dhariwal trained Aristos profited from a miserable ride given by jockey Christopher Alford on Aboline to win the A P Chief Minister`s Trophy, a rich terms race over a mile, the feature event of Sunday`s races held at Malakpet in a record time of one minute 38.60 seconds, fractionally bettering that of Dancing Dynamite. Aboline who went wide and raced on the edge of the grass track, was second ahead of Sprint Star who was rushed for this race all the way from Mysore in 24 hours but found the circumstances adversely affecting his performance.

Sprint Star was originally scheduled to run on Friday at Mysore in the Maharaja`s Cup. Since the race was postponed by a week due to heavy underfoot conditions, his trainer Satish Narredu perhaps thought that he could race his ward in Hyderabad in the belief that it would be an easy picking. The logistical exercise was bound to affect Sprint Star but then we look at our comfort much more than of the equine stars so much so that we compromise them to achieve our goals irrespective of the fact that we may be placing them at a great disadvantage. Nevertheless, by virtue of the fact that Sprint Star had beaten Aboline and Aristos convincingly when they had met at Bangalore during the summer season, he was the favourite ahead of Aboline to win race. Aboline is a dual Group I winner but with jockey C Alford astride him, you can always expect the unexpected. Fresh from achieving the milestone of winning 1000 races, Alford was expected to provide a quality ride especially since the progeny of Burden of Proof had covered up for his shortcomings in the past and given him glory. Alas, it was not to be!

Iapetus was the pace-setter as the field set out for the mile long trip, followed by Aristos, Aboline, Sprint Star, Vijayrath and Reconnect. Rounding the final turn, jockey Ryan Marshall pushed Aristos to take over the running. The Pratap Stud Farm progeny smoothly accelerated even as Aboline was being alerted to the task. Malesh Narredu chose to bring Sprint Star the shortest way home. Alford was unable to keep Aboline on a straight course as he lost control of the horse as the fancied runner drifted outwards despite which he finished with a flourish to be a close second. Aristos encountered no problems in front as Sprint Star did not show his patented burst of speed and was a well beaten third. Aboline`s finishing burst despite going wide and his jockey offering very poor assistance was indicative of the fact that he could well have won with better handling. But then we have to rejoice when the jockey wins and when he loses, we have to blame it on the horse but never on the jockey. This is the way we are expected to take it and any deviation from this is thought of is being unfair.

Ananth Vatsalya trained Kohinoor Mystic continued to be on the upgrade with yet another record breaking effort in the 1000 metres Malvado Plate, a Category I race. He stopped the clock at 59.38 seconds, bettering his own mark of one minue0.18 seconds. Kohinoor Mystic bolted to the front from the start and kept on expanding the lead to check in by a widening margin of four lengths. Splendid Act ran on to finish second ahead of Chestnut Charmer.

Ananth Vatsalya and jockey Umesh had combined successfully earlier in the day on lesser fancied Zambo Anga in the Epsom Plate (Div I). From a sixth position at the final bend, Umesh maneuvered a clear run with a furlong out and charged for home. Zambo Anga spared a length at the finish to Manduro who had all the chances but did not show the needed speed over this mile long trip but beat the rest for the runner up berth. Strategic Command had to be goaded early on in the race to keep pace with the field but once he got into his rhythm, he steadily overhauled one by one to end up a distance ahead of Kansas City Mac in the lower division of the race. The runner up who was in the rear ran on to finish second while long time leader Cheetah He Jeetha tired out to finish third.

Narayan Rao trained Cascading Glory came from way off the pace with a tremendous burst of speed of to get the measure of front running Sorbitrate to land the spoils in the 1200 metres Madanna Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Favourite Racing Rocket plodded home to be a poor third.

Donald Netto`s Surya Putra obliged in the hands of five kg claimer Kiran Naidu to win the Swamy Ramananda Tirtha Plate, a race for horses rated up to 50. Surya Putra darted into the lead inside the final furlong and had no problems in keeping his rivals at a safe distance. Favourite Pluto Queen had to be hard driven to gain the runner up berth ahead of Welcome Baby and Zone.

Ice Candy recoded an encore in the 1400 metres Forest King Cup. Ice Candy tracked The Parliament well into the straight before apprentice jockey Venkat pushed the favourite to take over the running. The favourite smoothly went clear and easily held off the late rally of Cannon Vision.

Apprentice jockey Sai Vamshi had Chameli take over the running on turning for home in the mile long Nizam Sangar Cup and fought a stiff battle with Dartos The Muscle. The battle lasted the entire final 300 metres with the latter nosing out the front runner in the final stride of the race.
