Portrush gives another vintage performance

By: True Blue   October 10 , 2010

The seven-year-old Portrush (Razeen – Husun) continued to flourish under the care of young Nazak Chenoy as he produced another vintage performance to claim the Noshir & Dolly Dhunjibhoy Sprint Million. The dark bay gelding, owned by Jaydev Mody in partnership with Dilip Thomas, darted to the front when the starter`s flag came down and Imran Chisty never slackened the grip on Portrush till he hit the wire. Violetta started her movement late and only managed to pip Pepe Junior for runner-up slot with Spirituall also in close tow. The big guns ? favourite El Tropico, Forest Flair and Arts ? were simply off colour on this day though they live to fight another day for sure.

Portrush (Imran Chisty4 up), winner of the Noshir & Dolly Dhunjibhoy Sprint Million, being led in by Mr. Jaydev M. Mody & trainer Ms N B Chenoy
The bred-n-purple Mighty Crusader ( Placerville – La Bonne Vie) remained an under-achiever throughout his brief career but gave owner Madhur Bajaj a reason to smile when he registered his success in the highest class. The Narendra Lagad trainee had the handicap in his favour and Pradeep Chouhan rode him with great vigour when Weizhou threatened to spoil his party. Misschevious Trot just edged out Harmonica in their fight for the minor places.

Superior Quest (Diffident – Days of Glory), whose connections had opted to race him only in terms races reserved for juveniles, showed that he has come of age when Karthik Ganapathy finally tested him in Class II company in the F. A. & K. A. Irani Trophy. Before Superior Quest could stamp his authority, A. Imran Khan however had pull out all stops on the property of Dr. M. A. M. Ramaswamy to wear down River Star, who was being hailed as a winner till in dying moments of the race. Silver Sands and Sea Value followed them home.

Amouresque (Mr Mellon – Complimentary), the joint property of D. Arun Nanda and Padmanabh Ruia, proved that her pitiful performance earlier was an aberration of sorts when she put in a sustained run to deny the long shot Showstopper an opportunity to cause an upset in the Police Commissioner`s Trophy. Earlier Star Trainer had tried to assert his authority but his vanished the moment Amouresque launched her assault. P. Kamlesh rode the winner with great aplomb and showed presence of mind when controlling the filly as she wavered under pressure. Favourite Ancient Wonder stayed in the hunt till the heads turned for home but he never raised any hopes thereafter. P. Kamlesh.

B. Prakash rode two winners in a row atop Vinayak trained Granados (Ikhtiyar – Glensanda), co-owned by Vijay Shirke, K.N. Dhunjibhoy and Byram Jeejeebhoy, who proved that he can stay till the cows come home in the Prudential Champ Trophy. Frost Fairy brought the field into the view for the last time over the Derby trip and fought tooth and nail with the top-weighted Granados till the final furlong where the latter managed to subdue him under the relentless pressure applied by Prakash. Arbudh ran a faraway third ahead of Lightning Cavalry.

Even before the horses were stalled for the Jimmy Umrigar Trophy, the odds quoted against Pesi Shroff`s protégé Elizabeth (Glory of Dancer – Queenscliff), co-owned by Shirke and Dhunjibhoy, gave a sense that the outcome was a foregone conclusion. The dark bay filly ran true to the market expectations and treated her nine rivals with disdain. Neither Ashwa Parwez, Flashing Sword and Ashwa Prerna, who figured on the judge`s frame, nor the rest of the runners tested the calibre of Elizabeth .

Rookie A. Sandesh booted home another brace of winners through Red Passion (Royal Gladiator – Shadow Dancing) and Persian Lily (Duja – Persian Conquest). Sandesh took both the winners on a successful start to finish mission. Red Passion went streaking into the lead eleven horse field and drew away in the straight to keep both Cape Ferrat and Ocean Odyssey, the fancied duo, at bay. The rest, it seems, were out for an airing.

Persian Lily was perfectly placed in the lower division of the Volkswagen Trophy by Rehanullah Khan and the filly was in receipt of eleven kilos from her main adversary Ocean Legacy. Persian Lily was a winner right from the word go and kept increasing her margin as the destination neared. Ocean Legacy ran an uninterested second with Nou Camp and Aberdovey behind him.

Hosidar Daji saddled Walk of Life (Ikhtiyar – Cape Vaticano ) made ample amends for her previous failure when she overtook Saddlers Rule in the home stretch. Walk of Life had the race well sewn up long way from home no sooner N. S. Parmar set her alight opposite the stands. Earlier Saddlers Rule stole a march over the field when Reinstate and Ijlal threw in the towel at the turn but failed to contain the challenge of Walk of Life. DaughterofDestiny finished a tame third while Razmaden, another fancied runner in the race, failed to accelerate when it mattered most and ended fourth.
