Iaepetus prevails in Ghulam Ahmed Memorial Cup

By: Tippu Sultan   December 19 , 2010

Jockey Beggy drove out Iaepetus to win the 1600 metres Ghulam Ahmed Memorial Cup, a Category I race, the feature event of Sunday`s races. The day`s races did not run kindly for punters who chase favourites as most races were dominated by lesser fancied runners.

The Ghulam Ahmed Memorial Cup is named after the famous Indian off-spin bowler who served the game of cricket as a coach and as President of Hyderabad Cricket Association. He was also associated with the Hyderabad Race Club. Soft-spoken Ghulam Ahmed was a thorough gentleman.

Iaepetus (P B Beggy up), winner of the Ghulam Ahmed Memorial Cup, being led in by trainer S A Abbas
Mission Chief was fancied ahead of the rest to win the feature event. Iaepetus was not enthusiastically supported as his last few runs were below his known capability. Beggy pushed Iaepetus to take charge of the proceedings within the first furlong and the progeny of Major Impact dictated the pace followed by Mission Chief, Vijayrath with the others spaced out behind. El Paso was at the tail end while Adamant Approach who lost considerable ground at the start, appeared to have lost all his zest for racing and ended where he began. Mission Chief weakened at the runners straightened for the final two furlongs of the race with Vijayrath joining issue with the front runner. Iaepetus showed enough resolution to get a good break over Vijayrath which held him in good stead as the latter finished powerfully only to fall short by a neck. Carte Blanche edged out Sparks who literally flashed onto the scene from nowhere.

Satyanarayana trained Windsor Manor lasted out by the skin of her teeth to win the 1200 metres Chaitanya Ratham Plate, a race for maiden two year olds. Windsor Manor raced a handy fourth before her jockey Shoban Babu maneuvered her way by coming the shortest way home and then surging ahead of her pursuers. Windsor Manor was hard pressed in the end by Swiss Don who covered big ground in the final stages of the race only to miss out by a whisker. Nothing seems to be going right for Daniel Grant who rode the runner up. Only a few years ago, he won the jockeys` championship at Mumbai.

Apprentice jockey Venkat guided Vijaysiddanath to a facile win in the 1800 metres Andhra Sub-Area Cup (Div I), a Category II race. Cheetah He Jeetha did the customary front running role and escorted the field into the straight at which point Vijaysiddanath smoothly accelerated and went clear of the rest. Vijaysiddanath had won the race long way from home. Modest Bride, Divine Ganges and favourite Arya took the next three slots on the frame. Apprentice jockey Sai Vamshi timed his challenge to a nicety on The Himalayas who got up in time to get the measure of Blazing Asian to post a narrow win. Dance Baby Dance held the initiative till he was displaced from that position by Blazing Asian who however could not last out to win the lower division of the Andhra Sub-Area Cup.

Chiranjeevi Krishna Chary (that is the full name of Ch K Chary) maneuvered his way through the middle on Splendid Knock and packed punch in his finish to get the measure of Good Shot to claim the Ballo Plate (Div I), a Category III race over six furlongs. Sai Vamshi did a tidy job on Kathakali who won the lower division of the race. Kathakali tracked runaway leader Chayanandan into the straight and quickened nicely to sail past the front runner and open up by a big lead. Splendid Show made a late rally but was shy by a neck at the finish.

Visiting jockey E R Creighton`s long wait to record a maiden win in India ended when he had an arm-chair ride to victory on Sterling Cruise in the 1400 metres Tribute Plate. Creighton had Sterling Cruise take command from the word `go` and the favourite proved too good for the field, winning by a widening margin of four lengths over April Showers.

Sugar Gold recorded an encore when he made the entire running and comfortably held off the challenge of Standing Ovation in the 1200 metres Zoom Zoom Plate (Div I), a five and half furlongs Category III race. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan, who rode Sugar Gold, also had the winner of the lower division of the race where China Pearl recorded an identical start to finish victory over Tiara who was the best of the beaten brigade.
