Read My Mind shows mighty heart

  October 27 , 2008

Read My Mind is what the progeny of China Visit has been named. And perhaps rightly so as the Michael Eshwer trainee had failed the punters who had backed her last time time with conviction without being able to read what was in store. Read My Mind then let them down badly as a firm favourite last time, running below par but on the concluding day`s action of the Mysore Regular Season, those who were not mind readers ended up losing out on a good opportunity as the four-year old filly won at lucrative odds, the Gayatri Devi Memorial Gold Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event.

The market was at least quick to read what was in store for the favourite as the odds drift on Potential Star who was bidding for a hat-trick foretold. Mighty Heart who had showed out in workouts and was racing with the benefit of a mock race, came in for sustained support while Read My Mind was let to run at lucrative odds following her failure as a favourite. But Read My Mind showed that she had a mighty heart as she chased the front-running second favourite well into the straight and disposed of her rival to win as she pleased. Mighty Heart led the field from the word `go` but he had no reserves left when challenged by the eventual winner who had superior race fitness. Potential Star put in a half-hearted effort to finish third.

A flurry of upsets marked the final day`s racing and race goers who had enjoyed a successful outing in adverse conditions on Derby day, ended up refunding most of their winnings. Southern Chieftan who has been forgiven for each of his failures was given another opportunity to redeem himself and he ran as a strong favourite in the Setia Technologi Cup, a race for horses in 40 to 65 category. But Southern Chieftan ran the worst race of his career, dropping back to the rear in the first furlong and then cutting an erratic course to perform miserably. Double Elite had everything going for him under the circumstances but he drifted out from a straight course losing precious opportunity in the process. Long shot Mr Bureaucrat came up with a good run in the hands of apprentice Himamshu on the wide outside to edge out the second favourite. Demanding ran on to finish third. There was an objection by the rider of Demanding against the rider of Double Elite for interference but the objection was overruled as it did not have much substance.

Prithviraj trained Perfect Analysis was one of the favourites to oblige. Backed strongly to win the 1100 metres Usha Balram Gold Cup, a race for maiden three-year olds, Perfect Analysis overcame a bad draw and a tardy start to demolish the challenge of Glory Bound who had attempted a start to finish mission. The second favourite Glory Bound had no answer when Perfect Analysis charged home with a powerful run inside of final 200 metres. Mr Sunrise ran on to finish third.

The gold and brown brigade was not inclined to put their best foot forward. Beauty Dancer was another who let down her supporters in the Bottolanda Gold Cup (Div II), a sprint race for horses in 40 to 65 category. Kalpavruksha, who had a good forward run in his first run on this track after being relocated from Pune, provided his enthusiastic young owners, a cause to celebrate by winning the race in great style. Sunny Baba kept Beauty Dancer at bay to take the second spot. Kalpavruksha should maintain his winning form. Mystified failed to carry the burden of expectations in the upper division of the race which went the way of well backed Billy Backjack whose flourish on the wide outside took him sailing clear of strongly fancied Little Splendour. Mystified ran on to be a poor third.

There was inspired support for Ho Chi Minh in the 1400 metres Seshadripuram Plate (Div I) and the favourite managed to save the day for his supporters with a good rally from near the back of the field, overtook the front runners one by one and then held on for a neck win over Gallardo who flew home only to find the winning post coming too soon. Cruise Control was a close third. Seven year old Perfectremembrance recorded the second win of his career when coming from behind to thwart the challenge of Splendid Glory and Kandiate in the lower division of the race.

Bliss had won in the hands of veteran N M Khan and once again he was entrusted to the same jockey but this time the support for him was even stronger in the 1200 metres Jayanagara Plate (Div I). However, Bliss just about failed to oblige as he was surprised by the late-rally of Amelia Cordell who won in the hands of apprentice Madhu Babu who is showing signs of becoming a jockey of promise. Son of Fortune who had let down a number of times, finally won at the expense of Azazel who narrowly failed to collar the front-runner. Anoosheek once again let down her supporters, packing up without a trace after a front-running effort which lasted till the final 300 metres.

In the day`s opener, Buddy won at the expense of Nano Blue and Wonder Splendour but the eight-year old hardly had any takers in the ring.
