Malesh Narredu saddles a brace of winners

By: Our Correspondent   April 28 , 2012

Trainer Malesh Narredu had a double through first season runners on the penultimate day`s action of the long winding Mumbai Racing Season on Saturday. The quality of fare was pretty run of the mill as there were as many as four races for three-year olds which were contested by backward lot of horses who were in the fray more for an airing. The prospectus certainly could have been framed better to avoid this sort of a scenario. Manyatta and Mable were the two horses which provided the double for Malesh Narredu. Jockey Zervan had a rewarding day booting home a treble.

The five furlong Royal Calcutta Turf Club Cup (Div I) saw Mable being the favourite though close to race time the odds went up on the got- abroad filly with support coming for New World and Something New. Jockey R K Mahesh who had begun with great promise as an apprentice long ago but fell foul with authorities getting a long holiday recorded a victory after more than five years. Mahesh had Mable lead all the way and the progeny of Diamond Green sped away from his pursuer New World who was outpaced from the start and also found the five furlong trip too sharp for comfort. She`s Sweet ran on to finish third. Manyatta proved overwhelming superior in the lower division of the race winning as he pleased by a widening margin of eight lengths over Golden Dame and Jens Secret.

The trainer-jockey combination of Mansoor Shah and Zervan were associated in the success of Holiday Dancer and Erotic Flame in the Ocean Breeze Plate, a race for maiden three year olds, which was run in two divisions. The well backed Holiday Dancer led all the way and won from late rallying Smokey Babu and the strongly fancied Star Fire Lady. Zervan was able to get a similar effort from Erotic Flame whose support in the ring firmed up close to race time while the price on ante post favourite Historica expanded significantly. Erotic Flame had enough speed and fitness to stave off the challenge of the favourite who made a futile bid to close the leeway in the straight. Lucky Red ran on to finish third without threatening the front running duo.

Narendra Lagad trained Double Diamond easily thwarted the bid of the controversial Jacqueline Smile in the 1400 metres Lone Star Plate, a race for horses rated 1 to 26. Jockey Richard Hughes had been handed a suspension of 45 days after the horse lost by more than 10 lengths merely for not following the instruction of the trainer which was deemed as having had a negative impact on the chances of the horse. Double Diamond who had played hide and seek in the last few runs confusing the punters as to the intent despite jockey Dashrath Singh having been declared to ride, led from the start and easily contained the challenge of Jacqueline Smile who had all the chances except that extra bit of ability.

Sheraz Sunderji`s Flying Star had been waited with long for a touch. The connections probably felt that they had waited enough and this was evident by the strong support for the five year old gelding to win the 1400 metres Trainers Trophy. Flying Star was taken on a start to finish mission by Zervan and the favourite proved that he was cut above the rest as he checked in well clear of Blue Mellon who was finding foot from behind after the cause had been lost. Ptolemy saved placed money.

The success in the lowest category is often reserved for trainer Antia who has the ability to test everyone`s patience before he lets go of his horses. He perhaps has the maximum of older horses in the lowest category. The speedy Mypethoney attempted to win the 100 metres Bravissima Plate from the word `go` but rookie jockey Mohsin was not up to delivering the goods as the front runner faltered close home. McQueen slipped into the lead along the rails close home and held off the late charge of Bayblues. My Pet Honey saved place money as she headed favourite Purple Moon for the third slot.
