The Mafia rules in feature event at Delhi

By: Our Correspondent   April 11 , 2014

The Mafia (Pawan Sharma) won the Arjun Plate over 1600 metres for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of the Delhi races on Friday. H A Khan trains the winner for Rajesh Sehgal and Sultan Singh.

Stablemates Master Virat, Miss Serena and Desert Eagle called the early shots with the favourite The Mafia (Pawan Sharma) racing in the fourth or fifth spot in the Arjun Plate over 1600 metres for horses rated 60 to 86. But on turning for home, Master Virat packed up and The Mafia, as in many races, took charge and hit the front. Miss Serena offered stiff resistance but The Mafia was always stronger to win by three parts of a length. Uno Uno Uno was a poor third ahead of Desert Eagle and First One. H A Khan, who lead in Glory awaits, trains the winner. C S Jodha, the rider of Miss Serena, objected against the rider of the winner for interfering near the 500 metres but it was over ruled.

Miss Sharapova (Irfan ali), ONTARIO(USA) - SORCERESS, made every post a winning one to claim the upper division of the INS Virat Plate over 1000 metres for maiden Indian horses 3-years-old only. Favourite Sun Flag was not unduly extended as jockey Ramlal was found wanting and ended an unwanted third behind Romancing With Life and ahead of Iam Possible.

The lower division was claimed by the odds-on favourite Glory Awaits (Pawan Sharma). The NOVERRE(USA) - LAND AHEAD (USA) progeny hit the front and was in no danger of being caught by any of the runners. Into Mischief got up in time to pip Bhitski to the runner-up spot while Sang Bleu was a poorly ridden fourth and should do a lot better next time out. Miss Cindrella was left at the start.

Favourite Ashwa Kundan shrugged off the front running Juzi and Racing King and took charge of the field in the Indian Navy Plate over 1600 metres for horses rated 20 to 46. Just as he was being hailed as the winner, Amity (Ramlal), HYMN(IRE) - ETERNAL BEAUTY, moved up six wide, pushed Master Djokovic wider and after a brief tussle got past Ashwa Kundan to win. Master Djokovic came flying to be second ahead of the Ashwa Kundan by a head. Had Ramlal ridden with half that vigour in the first race, Sun Flag might well have won.

The 5 to 1 shot Mystic Oaks (Dilip Singh) got a flier in the Admiral Plate over a scurry for horses rated 20 to 46. The DUJA(USA) - SANTELLA KATIE(GB) kicked on gamely to land the spoils event as Master Bolt got menacingly close and looked like going ahead but Mystic Oaks hung on grimly to win. Favourite Miss Snowwhite was a poor third travelling four wide all along while Invisible Breathe was a flying fourth.

Enter And Canter had been threatening to do just that very often in recent weeks. The LA VIE DIE COLORI - GERTIE LAURIE (GB) progeny finally lived up to his name to win the INS Kulish Plate over 1100 metres for horses rated 1 to 26. Sunny Kumar was forced to race between Miss Venus and Miss Edvina till the turn but Enter And Canter got stronger past the distance post to land the spoils ahead of the two while All Weather Gold was a good fourth ahead. Favourite Caratario was not spotted at the busy end.
