Treasure Mountain upsets in Krishnaraja Trophy

  August 14 , 2014

Nityanand trained Treasure Mountain pulled off an upset in the 1200 metres Krishnaraja Wadiyar Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of the concluding day`s races of the Bangalore Summer Season on Thursday. The five year old progeny of Ace was driven out by jockey Sandesh to stave off the late bid by Secret Punch. Trainer Lokanath enjoyed a successful day, saddling three winners.

Light of Success was expected to regain the form that she had displayedin winter as she had shown improvement in her workouts and this confidence was exuded in the solid support she got in the betting ring. Arta was another who had her share of supporters. Treasure Mountain, who had run a mile long race adopting runaway tactics and led till the final furlong, was available at fancy odds.

Yash Narredu had Arta lead from the start with Treasure Mountain settled behind the front runner. Light of Success did not get a good start but improved places on the wide outside, with her jockey Christopher having no control on the horse as she bolted and travelled very wide into the straight which hurt her chances. She showed up briefly in the straight before fading out of the scene. Treasure Mountain gradually assumed command in the straight and by the final furlong, had established a winning lead. Secret Punch came up with a late bid but found the front runner reach the safety of the post. Ishpingo was third ahead of Arta.

Castle Stuart, who led from the start, went sailing clear in the straight and shaped like a winner in the 1400 metres Allaire Stakes, a race for horses rated 60 and above. However, the four year old old slackened in the final stages of the race. Evraz covered ground rapidly in the final furlong and managed to overhaul the front runner in the shadow of the post. Summer Sun was faraway third.

Lokanath trained Flame of Passion controversially lost the 1200 metres Esquire Cup, a race for maiden three year olds, in the Stewards room. Flame of Passion fought out with Del Santo before asserting herself in the final moments of the race. Flame of Passion rolled over from wide outside and slightly hampered the progress of Del Santo who was rallying along the rails. Flame of Passion then quickened and won comfortably from Del Santo and favourite Equine Love. Jockey John put an objection against Kiran Rai who rode the winner for tightening him along the rails and bumping him which cost him the race. The Stipes recommended for the objection to be overruled but the same was upheld by three of the four Stewards present at the hearing. If one were to take into account how the objections had been consistently decided in Bangalore, the decision of the Stewards came against the run of expectations.

Rashid Byramji trained Artic Attraction showed amazing improvement when swamping the opposition in the 1600 metres Royal Command Stakes, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Artic Attraction had run a poor race last time out when finishing third, a neck behind Stimulate. Now more or less on similar handicap, Artic Attraction beat Stimulate by a widening margin of seven lengths. Every alternate run of Artic Attraction has shown a disappointing pattern. Artic Attraction had control of the race from the start and pulled away from Absolute Red to justify the tons of money that the horse attracted in the ring. Stimulate just about beat My Lakshmi for the third slot.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Spreadeagle finally found his rhythm when trouncing the opposition in the 1400 metres Littleover Stakes (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Spreadeagle led from the start and expanded the lead in the straight to win as he pleased from Regal Boast who was flat footed and found the front runner too speedy for comfort. Cherry Hinton was faraway third. Lokanath`s Secret Dimension who had four listless runs to his credit was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the lower division of the race and the daughter of Multidimensional had no problem in winning as she pleased from Secret Launch and Southern Fantasy.

Medinah from trainer Arjun Mangalorkar`s yard was highly thought off and as such, the strong support for him in the 1400 metres Sir Bruce Stakes was on expected lines. Medinah however found an unrelenting opponent in Authentic who went on a start to finish mission and held off the favourite easily in the hands of apprentice jockey Yash Narredu. Last outing winner Eternal Desire finished a tame third.

Suezy Oh who had let down as a favourite, found his mark in the mile long Malenahalli Stakes, a race for horses in the lowest class. Suezy Oh shot into a winning lead in the final furlong even as favourite Turf Tactics struggled from the start and disappeared from contention well before the race came on the boil. Suezy Oh`s stablemate She Loves It very nearly pulled off a big upset when she moved briskly from the rear position and came up with raking strides after being pulled out from the rails to wide outside in the final 200 metres. She Loves It failed narrowly and the defeat had more to do with jockey Adarsh who hasn`t won a race for eternity.

Arziki brought off a big upset in the 1200 metres Good Bye Stakes (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Woodberg came in for inspired support but jockey Yash Narredu perhaps rode the worst race of his career on this track when he went at break neck speed with Game Dancer in front and was in too much of a hurry to grab the lead which he did by coming wide into the straight. Woodberg slackened inside the distance post and Arziki sneaked in along the rails to win with a measure of comfort. Red Bolt ran on to finish third. Faraz Arshad trained Amigos who had won on the opening day of the season easily claimed the lower division of the race with end to end mission, easily staving off the effort of Balas Dream and Vigorous.
