Bold Majesty gets his third classic success

  December 13 , 2014

The Usha Stud Farm bred Bold Majesty won the Gr 2 Bangalore 2000 Guineas, the second classic of the season with a matter of fact victory on Saturday. The three year old son of Multidimensional provided a graded race double for his sire on the same day as four year old Snow Drift had won the Gr 2 Calcutta Gold Cup about an hour earlier at Kolkata.

The only classic winner in the fray, Ganapathy trained Bold Majesty was the obvious favourite to win and barring any hiccups his victory was assured. Jockey Sandesh settled Bold Majesty in the rear as Booker Jones set a modest pace in front. Midway through the race Sandesh realized that the pace of the race was slow and he would land himself in serious himself if he did not make his move early and be in striking position at the final bend itself. He reacted swiftly and moved places through the gaps that emerged and as was on the outside of the pace setter at the top of the straight. Booker Jones put up a stiff resistance and it took more than a furlong for Bold Majesty to assert his superiority. Zucchero filled up the third position while Speed Hawk who rallied late managed to pip Havelock Prince for the final position on the frame. The winner clocked a modest time of one minute 38.66 seconds.

Sharat Kumar trained Smile Stone who is being raced with serious intent, recorded an encore when easily accounting for the opposition in the 1200 metres Harangi Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Click who came in for spirited support in the ring, shaped to win when the seven year old shot into the lead in the final furlong but had no answer when Smile Stone swooped on him with a big run. Smile Stone went away for an easy win by a widening margin of four lengths. Albertino had a good break in the straight but he reportedly bled which was the reason why he rapidly fell behind in the final furlong. Lads Gladiator who was tardy at the gates covered ground in the straight to finish third.

The lower division of the race threw a confusing picture as more than the merit of the horses, the question that was being asked was ``who is on job?``. Strombolite became a strong favourite by default and it came as no surprise when the four year old filly performed dismally after being prominent till the final 200 metres. Eight year old mare Game Dancer led all the way and showed no signs of weakening and brought off a big upset. There were two reluctant finishers occupying the next two slots. Coolmore dragged herself to prominence to finish second while Wings of Fortune who veered out and knocked Open Page out of her stride causing jockey Anand to hit the turf, nevertheless recovered significantly to finish third. With the emphasis in BTC being to encourage to mediocrity with its quota system and other accompanying disastrous measures, we can only expect this sort of scenario in majority of races.

Sriram Komandur trained Adriphos benefitted from a smart ride by jokey Trevor Patel and an incompetent effort on the part of Arshad Alam on Kimora in the 1400 metres Parfait Amour Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Favourite Adriphos went on a start to finish mission but was strongly pressured by Kimora who looked like collaring the front runner. The horse lugged in and jockey Arshad Alam was unable to correct the drift and ride out which helped Adriphos to escape to victory. Extra Spark recorded a runaway win the lower division of the race leaving the rest stranded to win by over six lengths. Viva Diva was second ahead of Musical Treasure.

The run benefit helped Magical Light in good stead in the 1200 metres Infants Plate, a race for two year olds. Private Paradise went at a fast clip and looked to have the race in her safe keeping when she entered the final 100 metres. But at this stage, she began to slacken even as Magical Light got stronger. In a thrilling battle, Magical Light got better at the post. Favourite Oxford Opinion was not up to it and had to be hard ridden to finish third.

Padmanabhan trained Equine Love proved overwhelmingly superior, spurting clear at the top of the straight to win the 1600 metres Sovereign Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Real Supreme was the best of the beaten brigade finishing second ahead of Southern Fantasy.

Favourite Wild Wild Angels made a successful start to finish mission in the 1200 metres Bangarpet Plate (Div I), a race for lowest rated horses. Hidden deal made a futile bid to catch up with the front runner. Long shot Sayyonee just about held off a strong rally by Dream Neo along the rails to land the spoils in the lower division of the race. Favourite Reformer finished a poor third.
