Donald Netto trained Auxiliary is easily one of the best sprinters to have graced the Malakpet turf. The daughter of Tejano who has proved to be a veritable money spinner and won a bagful of races despite a troubled tendon, recorded her sixth straight win on Monday when she held off the challenge of Sound of Nature in the Raja Bahadur Venkatram Reddy Memorial Cup, a Category I races, which was the feature event of the day. The gusty five-year old mare will now be retired to stud and will head to Sans Craintes Stud Farm at Coimbatore to commence her duties at the paddock.
The long campaign and the energy sapping heat perhaps had its bearing on Auxiliary who did not win in the smashing manner that she was used to. She has been bothered by a tendon problem despite which she has bounced back to build up an amazing sequence of wins. The fighting nature of her was amply evident when despite coming under pressure, she pulled out that bit extra to beat a strong challenge of Sound of Nature and Red Fairy whose turn to win will come soon.
Leo D`Silva, who is trailing Prasad Raju by one point as the season heads to the final day, had a winner through Mighty Prince who managed to edge out Alberton Star in a close duel. Alberton Star had been systematically prepared with a few forward runs and he was backed strongly to land the spoils but Mighty Prince put paid to their hopes. Alberton Star`s start to finish attempt tactics were foiled by Mighty Prince and despite a strong ride by Suraj Narredu, the favourite went down by a neck. Pythagoras ran a fair third considering the fact that his saddle slipped. The blinkers perhaps helped Victorious Sally to have a decisive say in the lower division of the Super Brave Plate. Reality Show ran on to finish second.
Leo has been frustrated by the number of seconds that he has accumulated this season. Mr Chief who had come down a great deal was well backed to win and the five-year old gelding managed to keep Leo`s True Value at bay with a start to finish mission, to deny the trainer yet another point.
Indian Storm had been given a strange sort of ride by jockey Imran Khan on the last occasion when he lost as a firm favourite, cutting an erratic chart. Assigned to jockey Vivek who was getting back the privilege of using the whip after a longish break, the four-year old gelding was backed down spiritedly. Indian Storm moved into a striking position from the wide outside draw, ran straight as an arrow and quickened for home nicely to win going away from Lenavi and Proud Accolade. Vivek hadn`t won for quite some time and the victory of Indian Storm certainly highlighted the fact that the Stipes had made an error in not taking a hard look at the way it was ridden on the previous occasion.
Grey Shot restored for trainer Prasad Raju the one point lead that he had on Leo D`Silva when the son of Ontario who had a few useful outings, was backed down spiritedly and gave no problems to jockey Suraj Narredu to guide him home. Classic Dancer was a noteworthy second while Ravleena who was expected to put up a fight, perhaps broke down as she was not sighted long after the rest of the runners had passed the winning post.
After finishing a noteworthy third in the Derby, Black Mischief was expected to have a cakewalk in the 2400 metres Circar Cup and the son of Young Senor duly accomplished the task with minimum of fuss. Black Mischief had gone wide in the Derby but for which he could have possibly had a say in the finish of that prestigious race. Nano War ran on to finish second while Iaepetus, who was lugging in badly, brushed the rails in the back stretch, despite which he ran on to finish third.
Play It Smart and Greatballofchina fought a thrilling battle in the final 300 metres, with the bobbing of heads deciding the fate of the race. Play It Smart just about nosed out his pursuer in what turned out to be an exciting two horse race. Ripples was a length behind these two horses.
Since when was the last time that Uday Kiran had won was the question that was on everyone`s lips when he managed to guide the long shot to victory in the Pelican Plate, a seven furlong race. The victory of Since came as a big surprise as the mare returned a dividend of over Rs 400 for a five rupee investment on tote. The surprise victory of Since ensured that Alcohology was pushed to the second place ahead of Indradanush.
