Agatta promotes herself to another level

Noverro, from trainer Bharath Singh`s yard, upstaged his stable-mate, Captain Cook (Trevor Patel-up), in the 1,400m Independence Cup, Wednesday`s feature event. It`s another matter that Captain Cook carried the public-purse while Noverro, ridden by Dashrath Singh, failed to attract any support at 8/1.

Dashrath, however, ran out of luck in the 1,400m Arktouros Cup, which was claimed by trainer Farley Rodrigues` game mare Agatta who produced an electrifying run, almost from the wrong-end of the field, to steal the thunder in her last stride. Chauhan finished the day with three winners, including Stevalena, incidentally, from Bharath`s yard. The jockey`s third success, Amandus, was also saddled by Farley.

Noverro, with all round weight advantage, was taken to a start-to-finish mission while Captain Cook was always in chase. The half-money favourite, however, lacked the required acceleration, when asked for efforts, and settled for the defeat. In the same race, another youngster, Glamorously, also cut a sorry figure. The Robert Gowli-trained filly, too, failed to do anything worthwhile, finishing third, despite her pull at the weights from the hot favourite.

Agatta`s victory was a treat to watch. The credit for the ‘nose` victory of the five-year-old, must go to the mare and also to her jockey, Chauhan. Agatta rumored to have suffered a training setback, soon after her return from Bangalore where she placed behind Royal Salute, who had gone down fighting to Adam, recently in Pune. Notwithstanding her proven class, the Ikhtyar daughter hardly found support in the betting as her odds expanded from 2/1 to 4/1. Unconcerned by the happening in the bookmakers` ring, the champion galloper, who had humbled the might Dandified, last winter, went about her task in the known pattern and the style of racing -- gracing the wrong-end of the field, before coming with menacing run in the home stretch.

Agatta, once again, responded in her usual manner to Chauhan`s urgings, on the wide out in the final stretch. She snatched the verdict in her last stride from Bullet who was being hailed as a winner. Assuming that Agatta has got over her rumored problems, she is bound to promote herself to the higher than the highest level.

Early in the afternoon, Chauhan had demonstrated as to why he is the most sought after jockey in the circuit. The jockey also guided Bharath`s Stevalena to a narrow victory, over the public-choice, Real Presence, to claim the 1,600m Arizona Pie Handicap. It was the top-weighted Crixus who called the shots while Stevalena trailed the field until 600m from home. Switching the galloping course, rounding the home turn, Stevalena, looked dangerous, even as the 9/10 favourite, Real Presence – with a sizeable pull at the weight – was also positioned in the striking range. However, the Robert Gowli-trained favourite turned out to be no match for the powerfully Chauhan-driven filly, by Multidimensional out of Veena`s Pet.

Comparatively, Chauhan`s day begun easy when Rodrigues` Amandus justifying his odds and also the improvement to w in the 1,800m True Colours Handicap. In the four-horse field, the 8-10 favourite, was ridden in a long check until the final turn. Once given the go signal, the Carnival Dancer grey son covered the frontrunners, one after another, to be at the helm, 150m from home to score easily.

Made to follow the early changing leads, the 11/10 favourite, Fire Song, had no difficulty beating Rodrigues` fancied runner, Annie Oakley, in the 1,200m Norwegian Wood Handicap. Jockey P. Kamlesh who partnered the Arti Doctor-trained filly, in fact, had eased the pressure on the winner after overtaking Annie Oakley, inside the last furlong.

The concluding event, the 1,400m Amazing Handicap, too, was an easy pick for trainer Richard Alford`s heavily fancied runner, Murlough Bay. The Mull Of Kintyre daughter had won her last start with an equal ease and there every reason to believe that she is heading for a hattrick of wins, if entered in an open class again.
