By: Tippu Sultan   August 28 , 2016

Vittal Deshmukh trained Vijays Wonder got the better of Chinese Thought in the final strides of the race to win the 1100 metres Police Trophy, a Category II race for maiden three-year-olds which was one of the highlights of races held at Malakpet on Sunday. Favourite Cash Landing who appeared to have missed a stride while making her run on the wide outside, flashed on the scene late and could do no better than finish a tame third.

Chinese Thought led from the start and maintained it deep into the straight. Vijays Wonder who was in about the fourth or fifth position at the final bend, began to gain ground on the wide outside. It took longer for Vijays Wonder to measure the front-runner as this was a race where the jockeys were not allowed to carry whips. Jockey Laxmikanth finally managed to get Vijays Wonder to put her head in front in the final moments of the race to land the spoils at nourishing odds. Cash Landing was not given an enterprising ride and finished third.

Vijay Sakhi was strongly backed to record a repeat win in the 1100 metres Democracy Plate (Div I), Category II race. Jockey Srinath had Vijay Sakhi settled in a nice handy third position as Dandy Girl did all the running in front. Srinath pushed Vijay Sakhi to take the gap between the front-runner and Always Together to take charge inside the final furlong. The five-year-old mare swiftly pounced on the front-runner and bounced clear to record a comfortable win. Always Together ran on to take the second spot while long-time leader Dandy Girl was relegated to the fourth position by late-finishing Red Express. The well backed Altruist from the stables of trainer Hilton Sequeira won the lower division of the race with a powerful effort in the final furlong which had the rest stranded. Vijays Splendour also finished strongly to take the second place ahead of Midnight In Paris while Catherine who was in front for a long while in the straight, weakened to finish fourth.

Sequeira trained Ans Ans Ans had come to Bangalore earlier this year to run in a million. The temperamental filly did not race as she hurt herself during morning workouts and hence was out of action for 223 days. Now nursed back racing fitness, the three-year-old filly was backed spiritedly to overcome ring rustiness and have a decisive say in the 1200 metres Khammam Plate, a Category III race. Ans Ans Ans readily won the race though under pressure she went wide but jockey Sai Kumar was able to control the filly and ride her out the contain the challenge of George Cross. Vijays Dynamite was third.

Anant Vatsalya trained Upon A Star recorded a facile win in the 2000 metres Donegal Plate, a Category III race. Jockey Akshay Kumar who raced Upon A Star in a handy position, had no problem in guiding the long shot to take over the running with a furlong left in the race. Despite being inconvenienced by a rider-less horse in Vijays Splendour running in front, the jockey was able to steer Upon A Star to an easy win. Undu Undu Undu overhauled Buckshee by a whisker to clinch the runner-up berth.

Sequeira was also successful through his other ward Onk Onk Onk who managed to put his head in front at the all-important end to win the Elusive Hero Cup, a Category III race. Vijays Delight made good rally along the rails and held the initiative till the dying moments of the race. Under a vigorous ride by Sai Kumar, Onk Onk Onk was able to get past the front-runner on the wide outside to land the spoils. Golden Angel saved place money.
