Sky Mine lasts out to keep London at bay

By: Frankel   October 21 , 2016

Imtiaz Sait trained Sky Mine hit the front from the beginning of the 1600 metres General Rajendrasinhji Million, a terms race for three-year-olds and lasted out to win from fast-finishing favourite London, the feature event of long card of 10 events that were gone through at Pune on Saturday. Quite a few form horses came through though there were odd shocks which ensured that punters did not go home with a big booty.

Sandesh had no hesitation in taking Sky Mine to the front as the progeny of Mull of Kintyre enjoys running freely in front without any one contesting his lead. Anteros was settled in second positon ahead of Star Comrade while Comic Timing who took an awkward jump joining the field within a furlong. London was eased in about the fourth or fifth position. Sky Mine benefitted by the run in the front and the ground saving run had a great impact on the result. London failed to get a run through the middle and Zervan had to swing the favourite wide at the final turn and this manoeuvre cost all the chances for London as he was left to cover a lot of leeway on the front-runner. In the meanwhile, Anteros was inclined to run out at the final bend and his jockey had considerable difficulty in keeping him straight but the second favourite eventually got firm hold and drifted out and finished a dismal lost. Zervan brought London with a powerful run on the wide outside but the lesser fancied runner Sky Mine just about held on to win by a neck. Comic Timing ran on to be third.

Rehanullah Khan trained Champagne recorded an encore by keeping the challenge of Shield of Achilles at bay in the 1400 metres Artois Plate, a race for horses rated60 to 86. Shield of Achilles showed early speed to gain lead while Champagne was eased in the third positon by jockey Sandesh. In the homestretch, both these horses were involved in a stiff battle for supremacy but closer home, Champagne asserted his supremacy. Nature Boy was a well beaten third.

Lady Coachman`s only run at Mumbai had seen her lose by a whisker to Courtship and the latter had moved swiftly on the handicap scales. As such, Lady Coachman looked superior to win the 1000 metres Arabian Rose Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Sandesh took Lady Coachman to the front and the daughter of Kodiac left the field stranded at the top of the straight to win in emphatic fashion. Lady In Red nosed out Snowy Peaks to get the runner-up berth. The lower division of the race was won by M K Jadhav trained Monte Greco who also recorded a facile with hardly any opposition stopping his march. There was support for Kitty`s Hawk but the filly found the eventual winner too fast for comfort. Akki`s Pet was faraway third.

Zadmal Singh trained Joss got all the spaces along the inside and literally came from the rear of the field to win the 1800 metres Star Shine Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. At 800 metres marker, Joss appeared to have been lost in the crowd but jockey Bhawani Singh chose the inner route which proved a big blessing as the gap along the rails kept widening. Rapid Girl held off Atalya for the second. Favourite Volantis made no show.

Bhawani Singh was astride another long shot in the 1200 metres October Handicap, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 in identical fashion. Flashy Wings was in the rear end of the field and got all the openings in the straight and finished powerfully in the final furlong to win quite easily. Favourite Magical Memory was floored by the finishing burst of the eventual winner and had to settle for the second spot. Gran Paradiso just about held off Aurora Australis to claim the third place by a whisker.

The 1000 metres Red Dragon Plate (Div I), a race for lowest category of horses looked like a minefield. However, the one-sided support for Faisal Abbas trained Furiosa indicated that the three-year-old was a well-disguised gamble. Apprentice jockey G Amit had no problem in taking the speedy Furiosa to the front and the progeny of Arazan faced no threat from any of the runners while justifying the tons of money wagered on her. Super Icon nosed out Tough Enough to snatch the second berth. Hoshidar Daji trained Goldsmith shot ahead of the pack in the final furlong and won the lower division of the race in fine fashion. Rich N Rare covered a lot of ground to finish second ahead of Starry Image who was flat-footed by the eventual winner. Fancied Dusk N Dawn was nowhere to be sighted.

Trevor Patel saved the day for backers of on money favourite Elegant Beauty with a power-packed effort and this enabled the favourite to just about pip Fabio to land the spoils in the 1400 metres Piccolina Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Centaurus finished on well to take the third place. Shiraz Sunderji trained Marvel shot into the lead at the top of the straight and won the lower division of the race in splendid fashion. Cristo Boss who came in for big support found the winner too fast for comfort. Pretty Angel was a fair third.
