Favorites to the fore at Mysore

By: Sridhama   June 10 , 2009

For the first time during the ongoing Mysore Summer Season, followers of favorites had the better of exchanges on Wednesday. Jockey Gnaneshwar was the most successful jockey, booting home a treble while trainer Zareer Darashah had a brace of winners through Missiszippy and Ashkan.

Swift Sword was lodged the favourite in the feature event of the day, the Grey Gaston Trophy (Div I) for horses rated 40 to 65. However, there was late surge in betting on Easy Rider close to race time. Easy Rider was taken to the front early by apprentice Praveen and shaped to win even as Swift Sword was hard at work to overhaul the front runner. Praveen appeared to freeze as he lifted his hand to use the whip and stayed stuck in that position. He seemed to have severe pain in the shoulder, possibly suffering a dislocation or a muscle tear as he could not offer sufficient assistance to the fancied runner thereafter. Swift Sword profited as a result as he raced away to a comfortable win.

The well backed Thunder On won the lower division of the Grey Gaston Trophy. Thunder On who paced in front from the start was headed by Bridge Too Far close home. However, Thunder On, in the hands of jockey S John, fought back and wrested the lead and the race. Bridge Too Far faltered after raising hopes and finished second.

Darashah‘s ward Ashkan shed his maiden status in style. Unlike on debut where he had drifted out to the outer sand, he shot into the lead from the start and kept the rivals at bay to record an impressive win. Time For All who was expected to pose a stiff challenge to the favourite, traveled in the mid-group and showed some spark while finishing second best. Time For All should profit from this forward run. The other horse to impress was the third placed Definite Believe.

Another Darashah ward to oblige during the day was Missiszippy. Unlike last time out where she was taken on an end to end mission, she was settled in second behind Master Prospect and was only urged for an effort in the straight and she responded well to hit the front and won capably. Though Mr Magic came up with a big run, he could not overhaul the front-runner who proved better in the end.

Golden Flowers won the Doddaballapura Plate for horses rated 20 to 45. Anoosheek started as a favourite but heavy backing on Golden Flowers saw both of them end as joint favourites. Golden Flowers drifted out badly in the race but still he managed to overhaul the front running Anoosheek quite comfortably. Gold Kiss showed some improvement while finishing third.

Cartouche completed an encore in the opener with Final Frontier chasing the favourite without much hope.
