Yana brooks no opposition in Gold Label Stakes

By: True Blue   October 5 , 2008

Yana finally reached the pinnacle of her career albeit three starts later than she had achieved that feat, the last one being in the Fillies` & Mares` Stakes here on Sunday.

The manner in which Yana performed to prove her talent in the last three outings has helped heal the wounds of both her owner Jaydev Mody and trainer Bezan Chenoy, whose morale was badly dented following the disqualification of the filly in the Indian Oaks.

Yana raced handy third behind leader Agassiz and Tigresse Noire till the six-horse field reached the Turf Club House and then P. Kamlesh gave Yana her head. The bay filly encountered no resistance at all and brought her rivals into the home stretch. She was not stretched and kept going to win easily from Gruezi, who laboured hard to quell Oyster Princess` attempt to take the runner-up slot. Kamlesh`s exultation on reaching the winning post had a story to tell of its own.

Owner Mody too shook hands with Kamlesh to congratulate him before leading the winner but the act was a token of expressing his regret for chucking the jockey out of the saddle from Yana when she won in the hands of K. P. G. Appu. It was a perfect case of all`s well that ends well.

Kamlesh ended the day with a fine treble having earlier partnered Monopoly for the same connections and then steering Highland Crown to a glorious win. Monopoly went straight down to business from the gates and was a winner at every stage of the five-furlong sprint. Monopoly had Schnell on her tail but the latter couldn`t match strides with her. Firefoot, who was hard ridden by Y. S. Srinath, ended a close third.

Highland Crown (Royal Kingdom – Rahy`s Serenade) from C. D. Katrak`s yards pulled off a smart maiden victory in the Green Label Salver. The bay gelding stalked Bourbon Queen and Name for Fame from the barriers and seized command in the home stretch. With the rest of the runners falling by the wayside, the onus fell on the least fancied Chios to challenge Highland Crown. Malesh Narredu rode Chios well off the pace till the fag end of the race and wove his way through the middle to be in contention. But Highland Crown held on gallantly to thwart Chios` spirited bid. Bourbon Queen ended a tame third and Handsome Returns` performance was dismal too.

Malesh shared the limelight with Kamlesh by booting home a brace of winners. He was astride Magansingh Jodha trainee Hidden Danger (Hymn – Afsheen), who upset the applecart of the on-money favourite Golden Kingdom. The favourite raised hopes of his supporters when heading the bunch of ten runners and his success looked imminent till Malesh asked Hidden Danger for an effort. The bay filly responded with an electric response which floored the favourite. Sarjerao ended third while Excellent Gift ran pathetically to finish fourth.

Lil Miss Sunshine (Ontario – Top Glad) recorded the most stylish victory of the day in the hands of Malesh. The P. Shroff trained filly took command from Sparrow Hawk at the bend and drew away for an emphatic win. Johnny Bravo ended a street behind the winner with Rags To Riches and Sparrow Hawk following him home. After Golden Kingdom the next fancied candidate from Narendra Lagad`s barns to bite dust was Starlite Express. Apprentice Akash Agarwal is in the dock because of Starlite Express, who not only ran below par but also failed to figure on the judges` board.

Ganador (Cruachan – Ganadora), who hails from Rehanullah Khan`s stables, earned his corn bill the hard way by keeping favourite Sudden Impact, Modesty and Lady Trooper at bay in a blanket finish. Nirmal Jodha astride Ganador seized the initiative from Charging Rhino in the straight and held on resolutely till the end.

Altamash Ahmed nursed grey mare Sea Gull (Placerville – Silver Academy) registered her second successive win this season when Kishore Kadam took her on a successful start-to-finish mission. She increased the margin of victory towards the end by pulling away from Lovely Feelings, Caramel and Firey Future.
