The Bangalore Summer Season, starting on Saturday, May 17 is the most competitive racing season in the country. With the best of outstation horses, albeit in limited numbers, coming for the season, every major race of the season will be a keenly contested one. The terms of the races are such that they don`t become the monopoly of either the best performed horses carrying top weights or classic placed horses enjoying pull in weights. The weights have been so adjusted unlike other centres that all good horses have equal chances. The Kingfisher Derby will be run on Sunday, July 13.

All the sweepstake races during the summer season will carry attractive added money. The Gr 2 B.T.C Anniversary Cup which is the best seven furlongs race for four year olds and over has been made richer with Rs 2500000 as the added money. The Maharaja`s Cup which is run a weak prior to the running of the prestigious Kingfisher Derby will have added money of Rs 25 lakhs. The Nanoli Stud Juvenile Million and Karnataka Mile Championship will have added money of Rs 20 lakhs. The other races which have seen a quantum jump in stakes are Jayachamraja Wadiyar Cup, Chief Minister`s Cup, Chief Justice Cup, Juvenile Sprinters` Million, Bangalore City gold Cup, Bangalore Summer Million which will have Rs 15 lakhs as added money. The Nawab Arshad Ali Khan Memorial Cup which is a terms race for three year olds will have added money of Rs 10 lakhs. The entries for these races close on May 2.

The entry fee and forfeits put together is only .40 per cent of the added money as against two per cent charged at other centres. This is a big relief for owners who used to end up paying hefty sums for merely entering their horses without being sure of running them.

With the increased added money for the sweepstakes races, owners would have ended up paying Rs 2 crores more per year in the form of entry free alone for these big races if the earlier rate of 1.6 per cent which was prevailing at BTC till 2012-13 winter season was maintained.
