Digger springs a surprise in Members Cup

By: Tippu Sultan   January 28 , 2019

Faiyaz Ali Khan trained Digger who was available at long odds, trounced the opposition in the 1200 metres Members Cup, a race for horses rated 42 to 62, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. Digger had always proved a handful whenever he enjoyed an uncontested and substantial lead as it suits his running style and there was none in the opposition to match his speed which turned the race decisively in his favour.

Thundering and Sarvatra were the horses favoured by the punters in what appeared an open type of betting race where none of the contestants stood out. Apprentice jockey Sk Rafique took Digger to the front and the long shot enjoyed a big break over the rest right through the race and eventually checked in by a margin about two lengths over New State who broke off level from the gates this time out was second. Shandaar ran on from behind to take the third position. Apowerx who chased the eventual winner Digger till turning for home eventually packed up to finish a dismal last.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Yours Forever enjoyed the support of the punters in the 1600 metres Tintinnabulation Cup, a race for three-year-olds. Royal Ruby was the other horse in betting consideration. The race was won by 10 to 1 shot from Leo D`Silva`s stables. Blazer who hit the front within the first furlong enjoyed the uncontested lead. Jockey Umesh drove out Blazer in the stretch to establish a winning lead. Miss Marvellous finished with a rush but the front-runner was already in the vicinity of the post when the filly began to cover the ground with menacing strides. Royal Ruby was third while the favourite Yours Forever made no show.

Hilton Sequeira trained Roll Coll was handicapped last time out with the equipment malfunction which resulted in the jockey losing the reins. The jockey pulled up and subsequently the horse was declared as a non-starter. Roll Coll was backed to the exclusion of the rest to bounce back in the 1100 metres Mir Fazilath Hussain Memorial Plate, a race for three-year-olds. Pontius Pilate who led from the start appeared to have stolen a march with Roll Coll taking time to warm up. However, the complexion of the race changed when Roll Coll gained momentum and covered the leeway of about five lengths in the final furlong and overhauled the front-runner with a measure of comfort. Jockey Akshay Kumar was astride the winner. Safra was third.

Akshay Kumar who had just one winner on the Derby day had a double in the small card of six events. Vittal Deshmukh trained Dormello was strongly fancied along with Eau Claire to win the 1200 metres Best of Fun Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 25. Akshay Kumar brought Dormello into contention in the final furlong and the fancied runner bounced clear to go beyond the reach of Eau Claire to record an easy win. Hammer necked out Aalishaan to save place money. Prasad Raju trained Blazing Speed looked too good in the lower division of the race and this perception was also shared by the majority which resulted in the horse going to the post as a cramped on money favourite. Jockey Suraj Narredu took Blazing Speed to the front from the word `go` and faced no problems en route while checking in by a margin of three lengths. Parizaat and Golden Adara occupied the next two slots.

Donald Netto trained Love Machine who had recorded an impressive win last time out, was once again backed with conviction to record an encore in the 1400 metres Chowmahalla Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Love Machine just about managed to oblige the huge expectations. Second favourite Crimson Fire who took time to get into her rhythm finished powerfully only to miss the berth by a whisker. Darshish too was in strong contention but weakened to finish a close third, a neck behind the runner-up.
