Vittal Deshmukh trained Golden Fortune who had run a suggestive third in his last outing built on that performance while thwarting the challenge of Be Sure to win the 1800 metres Cape Knight Plate, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races in a new course record timing of one minute 55.55 seconds. Favourite Reunion flopped miserably, finishing a tame third.
Reunion who had been campaigned ambitiously against formidable opposition at Bangalore was back to taking on the local challengers against whom he had often asserted his superiority. The odds drift and the fact that in the small field of six runners, the bookies dared to offer a chance to bet on the favourite in place second itself suggested that something was amiss. Ajeeth Kumar took Golden Fortune on a start to finish mission with Be Sure in proximity while the favourite Reunion was settled in the rear. Golden Fortune had a useful lead coming into the straight which he held on to with a gutsy performance even as Reunion faded out of contention after moving up with a brisk effort in the stretch. The only challenger for Golden Fortune was Be Sure who closed with a rush, but the front-runner managed to cling on to the lead.
Another Deshmukh trainee Ruletheworld who had gone down fighting narrowly on the last occasion made amends by winning the 1600 metres Cape Knight Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Ruletheworld chased Red Snapper well into the straight before storming clear in the final furlong and opened up a useful lead which ensured that the favourite would win with a measure of comfort. Explosive came up with a big effort to finish an impressive second ahead of Miss Marvellous. After doing all the front-running, Red Snapper weakened to finish fourth.
Donald Netto trained Victory Parade who had finished an impressive second to Mon General in his previous run obliged huge expectations when tackling the challenge of last start winner Consigliori with a measure of comfort in the 1400 metres P M Bokadwala Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Jockey Akshay Kumar took the favourite on a start to finish mission with Consigliori breathing fire alongside but inside the final two furlongs, Victory Parade began to assert his supremacy and in the final furlong expanded the lead to four lengths when crossing the winning post. Honest Hunter rallied late to finish third ahead of Dunkirk. The winner clocked a new course record timing of one minute 24.6 seconds.
Anant Vatsalya trained Mossad obliged the expectations of his optimistic supporters and won the day`s opener, the 2000 metres Subramanya Bharati Plate, a race for horses rated up to 25, in the hands of apprentice jockey Afroz Khan. Halo`s Princess attempted start to finish tactics but, in the stretch, was unable to break free as favourite Tur Emperor essayed a strong challenge. Even as the latter was getting the better of the front-runner, Mossad showed up on the wide outside and despite going wide and running green, had enough ammunition to win the race with a measure of comfort, sparing more than four lengths at the finish.
Laxman Singh trained Siyabonga was the most expensive failure of the day. Backed strongly on the strength of an impressive second behind Ace Ace Ace to win the 1600 metres Charminar Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, the progeny of Kingda Ka never gave hopes, failing to make an impression in the stretch. Last start winner N R I Power who chased King Maker well into the straight, shot ahead in the final furlong and held off the late flourish of Nayadeep whom he had beaten on the last occasion as well. King Maker who had planted in the gates in his previous run kept the third position after leading most of the way. Durango was fourth while Siyabonga finished in the ruck.
Vittal Deshmukh trained Evon Von Brando swamped the opposition in the Byerly Brigade Plate (Div I), a race for horses 20 to 45 assuming command from the word `go`. Evon Von Brando`s form was disguised because the saddle slipped on the last occasion and the horse had run riderless. The market believed that the race would be a straightforward fight between Magic Street and Delphina, but it proved to be a wrong assumption. Evon Von Brando was well clear of the rest on turning for home and Magic Street who went in chase failed to hit the board. Delphina ran on to take the second position ahead of Southern State. Leo D`Silva trained Max came up with a big effort on the wide outside to storm clear in the final furlong to win the lower division of the race in great style at nourishing odds. City of Ayaansh led the field deep into the straight before Max on the wide outside assumed charge with a furlong left in the race. Amazing Script who was well-positioned to strike failed to accelerate in the manner required and finished second ahead of Holy Healer who was a lost cause having left to cover too much of leeway in the stretch.
