Augustus Caesar edges out Golden Guest

By: Frankel   December 27 , 2019

Altamash Ahmed trained Augustus Caesar edged out favourite Golden Guest close to home to win the 1200 metres P D Bolton Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of the evening races held at Mumbai on Friday. Augustus maintained the good form of Pune and was driven out by jockey Neeraj Rawal to record an encore at the expense of favourite Golden Guest.

David Egan had Golden Guest lead from the start with Silver Flames along the rails and Sharareh on his outside with August Caesar settled in the fourth position. Silver Flames was boxed on the inside and apprentice jockey Nazil was not of much help in extricating the horse for a clear run. Silver Flames was a lost cause by the time Nazil pulled it out to make his bid inside the final 100 metres. Golden Guest managed to keep the lead till the closing stages of the race, but it was clear that the favourite would be overwhelmed by August Caesar who was essaying a big run on his outside and was travelling the best of the lot.

Pesi Shroff trained Sasakwa was widely expected to have a big say in the 1400 metres Edgar Desylva trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 and this sentiment was reflected in the short price quoted on the favourite. However, Sasakwa disappointed with a dismal effort finishing a poor third. After Western Front led deep into the straight, Rainbow Trout came from way off the pace and sped away for a comfortable win over Till End of Time who came from further back to take the runner-up berth.

Revelator was quoted at a short price as the Shiraz Sunderji trained three-year-old colt had the best form to win the 1400 metres Conrad Pereira Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Jockey Nicky Mackay had an arm-chair ride to victory on the favourite who collared the field in the final furlong to eventually win by a widening margin of seven lengths over Beemer and Martini.

There was sustained support for Karthik Ganapathy trained Saddle The Wind to win the 1600 metres Wild Eagle Plate, a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Saddle The Wind quickly took over the running from the front-running Whoopsidaisy inside the final two furlongs and spurted ahead. However, Saddle The Wind could not sustain the lead till the post as Retained Asset swooped on her and got stronger close home. Chezza ran on to save place money.

Lesser fancied runner from trainer Imtiaz Sait`s ward Memorable Memories was guided to a facile win by jockey David Egan in the 1200 metres Bangalore Turf Club Ltd Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Dallas Todywalla trained Despatico was frustratingly second for the fourth time in a row as the Leitir Mor came up with a late challenge long after Memorable Memories had spurted away to eventually record a facile win. Despatico had a hopeless task when Sandesh who was not alert to the danger of leaving too much to do in the final furlong brought the filly with a late bid which was bound to go in vain. Monk came in for bigger support despite no encouraging form could only finish third.

An aggressive finishing effort by Nicky Mackay on lesser fancied Chephirah ensured a thrilling win for the Shiraz Sunderji ward over Warrior Clan in the 1000 metres Free Radical Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Pesi Shroff trained Copper Queen came in for big support with both the horses which were involved in the finish being available at nourishing odds. Jockey Leigh Roche had Copper Queen lead from the beginning with Warrior Clan in the chase while Chephirah was some lengths adrift. Inside the final furlong, Copper Queen looked vulnerable when Warrior Clan came up with a big powerful effort but before the latter could measure the front-runner, Chephirah showed up on the wide outside with a sustained burst of speed and managed to snatch the verdict in the concluding stride of the race from Warrior Clan. Copper Queen weakened to finish third another half a length behind.

Sangram Singh Joshi trained Isinit justified the strong favouritism and won the 1200 metres Machiavellianism Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Apprentice jockey K Pranil allowed Abraxas to set the pace till turning for home before getting busy on the favourite. Isinit assumed command inside the final furlong and held off the late challenge of Outstanding. Kalina who paced with the eventual winner till the favourite broke clear in the final furlong ran on to finish third.
