Stephen Breaux suspended after defeat on favourite

By: Storm Again   September 27 , 2009

Visiting French jockey Stephen Breaux was suspended from riding in races pending enquiry following the defeat of favourite Sparkling Spirit in the second race of Pune races on Sunday. Favourite Sparkling Spirit lost in questionable circumstances but the decision to suspend the jockey came about after the Stewards ordered an enquiry into the possible interference caused by eventual winner Mariposa to the favourite. The character of the enquiry changed dramatically after Narendra Lagad, who trains Sparkling Spirit, appeared before the Stewards to inform that he suspected that Stephane had not done justice to his mount.

The 23-year-old jockey from France who is on his first visit to India has ridden 150 odd winners in France, USA & UK, and was riding three-year old filly Sparkling Spirit who was quoted at cramped odds. The filly lost ground at the start despite which she made good progress and shaped to justify the favouritism but the jockey was not aggressive in his finish. The favourite finished a close third.

Nobody anticipated the final outcome of the enquiry as never in the history of racing under RWITC racing such a thing had happened. Instead of debating on the interference and its consequence thereof, the Stewards ended up brushing up the rule book and to act on the powers vested with them to declare the race result to stand but at the same time deciding that all bets with the bookmakers and the totes pools be refunded. The decision of the Stewards was dubbed populist and also there is concern that this decision may set a precedent with demand for such action becoming a routine. The Stewards have invited pressure on themselves by their decision though the verdict did come as a big relief to big bettors who had put their faith on the favourite. Those who had taken chance on the lesser fancied runners were left to curse their luck.

The French rider continued to ride in the subsequent races but the Stewards later decided that he should be suspended with immediate effect and a final decision on the punishment to be meted out to him for not allowing his mount to run on its merit to be taken later, which in effect means that the jockey had stopped the horse from winning. The final decision will be handed out after the Stipes conclude their investigation.

Trainer Narendra Lagad has often found himself on the wrong side of the public esteem due to his fancied runners often not running true to the potential displayed by its previous runs. Former RWITC committee member Gautam Lala, whose family owns Sparkling Spirit, has lodged a written complaint with the club asserting that he was not satisfied with Stephane`s riding.

This is really absurd, This type of action of refunding the bets may effect the whole racing as such. Punters at the race courses will become more aggressive and violent when a hot favourite fails.

The stewards should penalise the jockey, and investigate the trainers involvement also with the bookies, and penalities to them should be so harsh that they should curse their stars for having committed a sabotage like this. but returning the bets is not a proper action. Were the decision makers played huge amounts on the losing favourite???

for godsake now do not stop with only punishing the jocky, now is a chance for the club to investigate through this jockey, the other people involved in this (trainer/s, bookmaker/s, etc

The stewards has done the right thing. Because the persons behind the defeat of hot favourite should get a lesson that if they make race for defeating favourites they can not eat the public money. Also the jocky riding favourite will not get any monetory benifits from race fixers.

This is really surprising to note that all the bets were refunded, the stewards of the club are taking undue advantage of their positions by making the race null and void.It appears that the racing punters in general are facing a lot of troubles due to whims and fancies of the stewards as the verdict cannot be challenged legally.I hope these unscruplous powers vested with the stewards should be removed.

Narendra Lagad is no saint. He is very much responsible for so many of his favourites failing. The nail that pinned him was when a bookemakers phone records were submitted in an earlier enquiry and had Lagads number all over it. Then the lame excuse that i have real estate dealings with him for which i call him. I didnt know lagad had that much real estate to be calling him up week in and week out

Would a bet or race be cancelled if a 6 to one suffered the same treatment or handling during a race where the favorite won ?? Hasn`t trainer Lagad been under scrutiny for over a year regarding certain dubious acquaintances of his . As the average racegoer , i simply beleive that a favorite lost and there may have been some hanky panky . But doesn`t that happen often . Thats what happens when money is involved . Wake up and accept the fact commitee ...
What about the hundred bucks the taxi driver played on mariposa with his hard earned money , you want to snatch that away because a favorite lost ?? If this is allowed , on what faith can one come to the races and place a bet not knowing when a winning bet wont be paid for .
Curious question ... How many people in support of this decision had wagered on the horse ??

1. The filly Sparkling Spirit is not fast from the gates as shown in her previous runs in race nos. 35 and 141. Her first run was in a 6 furlong where she sat 5th and her second run was in a 7 furlong where she sat 6th and finished 3rd in both these races.
2. The filly was then entered in a 6 furlong race on Sunday 27/09/2009 race no. 175 which had very speedy 5 furlong horses to make a fast pace for the race. The baby was running for the first time in an open set and not a maiden and therefore had experienced and speedier horses to contend with.
3. The trainer changed the equipment 3 days before the race. A cross nose band was used to improve the performance of the horse. Also, a rubber bit which was used in the previous races was changed to a regular bit. This filly is a baby and babies usually do not like any equipment unless they get accustomed to it gradually. The filly’s mouth is very soft and is not accustomed to a cross nose band and a steel bit. There was no gate practice done with this new equipment. So, obviously when the filly jumped out of the gates she threw her head up in irritation and was not getting into her stride for the first 50 metres and lost about 7 – 8 lengths at the start. As the filly had lost vital distance, the jockey didn’t use her up the hill but beautifully positioned her between the 4 and 3 furlongs and took the lead into the straight and lost the race in a close fight after getting squeezed by the winner. The jockey did his best and also rode her to the fullest cracking her 8 times and lost the race in a very close finish.

Another victimizing act singling out a Jockey alone? There was an inquiry some time last year and the inquiry lasted for very long time and was quite malicious and one sided. The focus was to let off the trainer and scape goat the JOCKEY. The very fact of Trainer tendering an unsatisfactory riding skill of the Jockey immediately after the race is by far a same kind of stunt played by the trainer in the past too. Why don`t the stipes take a call on the percentage of fav winning from this ward for once to justify the the so called inquiry???
