French Turf Empire Tightens Its Grip on the Arc
French Turf Empire Tightens Its Grip on the Arc Coolmore and Godolphin may dominate the headlines of international racing, but cross the English Channel and the French have their own formidable turf empire. Francis-Henri Graffard, backed by the Aga Khan Studs and partnered by jockey Mikael Barzalona, virtually swept last Sunday’s Arc trials at ParisLongchamp. Daryz, Varandir and Erdenali strengthened their Arc claims, while Friendly Soul added an English challenge in record-breaking style. The battle lines are drawn.
Nelson Reuben, a jockey who rode with distinction
Indian racing has lost one of the most accomplished jockeys of its golden era. Nelson Reuben, who passed away today, was a familiar and respected figure on the Indian turf during the 1970s and early 1980s. A stylish and intelligent rider, he partnered some of the finest horses of his generation and rode with distinction at the highest level, leaving behind memories that endure among racing enthusiasts.
The Horses Have Found a Home. What About the Jockeys?
Most of the race-fit horses displaced from Delhi have found accommodation at other racing centres and will continue their careers. The jockeys who rode them have been left facing a very different reality. Some have lost their homes, others their licences and many their livelihood. A few have been forced to take up delivery jobs to survive. In these extraordinary circumstances, the racing fraternity must not forget the humans behind the horses.
