Fourth Wing Edges Thriller in Padmanabhan Cup

  March 8 , 2026

Horse racing occasionally delivers drama. On other days, it saves the real suspense for the final stride. The inaugural S Padmanabhan Cup, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, chose the latter script, producing a finish so tight that even the camera had to take a second look before deciding who actually got there first.

Aman Altaf Hussain trained Fourth Wing finally emerged with her head in front after a spirited skirmish with Bee Magical and Earth, the trio virtually crossing the finish in a line. Meanwhile, Bishop, widely tipped to play a starring role, chose instead to rehearse for a retirement speech, running a flat race that suggested the horse may have finally felt the effects of touring at different racing centres in the country this year.

Jockey Yash Narredu was in far more cooperative mood with fate, booting home three winners to emerge the most successful jockey of the afternoon. Trainer Pradeep Chouhan, not one to be left out of the celebration, saddled two winners and quietly pushed his tally to five for the weekend.

The race was run in memory of the legendary S Padmanabhan, one of the towering figures among Indian trainers. Fate, in one of its poignant twists, took him away in October just days before his ward Miracle Star captured the Mysore Derby. The race held in his honour produced a contest worthy of his reputation. Fourth Wing, under relentless pressure from Earth, who had enjoyed the early advantage, and Bee Magical, who hovered menacingly in the closing stages, held her ground gamely to start proceedings on a fittingly competitive note.

If the opener set the tone, the 1600 metres J P Vazifdar Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, decided to follow the same script with another head-bobbing finish. Rehanullah Khan trained Don Julio, who had developed a frustrating habit of finishing second, finally remembered that races are meant to be won. With Prashanth Dhebe persevering in the saddle, Don Julio edged past Tyrannus right on the line, the nod of heads mercifully going his way.

Trainer Rehanullah Khan deserves credit for patience. He had long maintained that Don Julio would climb the class ladder eventually. The horse simply took his time reaching that conclusion. Tyrannus, who led into the final furlong, fought hard but never quite shook off the persistent Don Julio. The favourite prevailed by a whisker, with Seneca finishing third.

There had been some enthusiastic betting on the veteran Rambler, though the old warrior appeared to have misplaced his finishing kick somewhere along the backstretch and had to settle for fourth.

The 1400 metres Rajpipla Trophy, for maiden three-year-olds, turned into a one horse parade once Zayyan decided he had seen enough of suspense. Trained by Pesi Shroff, the colt had already hinted at ability while finishing a strong second in his previous outing. Sent off as an almost money back favourite, Vivek G wasted no time in sending him to the front.

From there, the race resembled a training gallop with spectators. Zayyan quickened effortlessly in the final furlong and stretched away to win by six widening lengths, announcing his arrival with the subtlety of a trumpet blast. Lion Heart produced a late surge to nose out Spectra for second.

The 1000 metres J Rustomji Suparivala Trophy, for maiden three-year-olds, saw Pradeep Chouhan trained Staria justify strong market support, though not without providing a brief moment of saddle related suspense. The saddle reportedly shifted during the race, but jockey Akshay Kumar managed to keep both balance and composure intact long enough to drive the favourite home.

The finish might have been far tighter had Queen Caroline not hampered Lucky Diamond at a crucial stage. The interference likely cost Lucky Diamond a genuine winning chance. Queen Caroline initially finished a head ahead of Lucky Diamond for second, but the stewards intervened and promoted Lucky Diamond to the runner up spot after the objection was upheld.

In the 1000 metres Greater Mumbai Police Trophy, for horses rated 20 to 46, favourites Heaven`s Rhythm and Chelsea collectively demonstrated the art of disappearing when required most. The former was hardly sighted near the frame while the latter managed a modest fourth.

Taking advantage of this convenient vacuum, Faisal Abbas trained Ensky led from start to finish under Umesh, scoring at rewarding odds with the comfort of a horse enjoying an uninterrupted Sunday stroll. House of Lords held off Jaisalmer for second.

The 1400 metres Vallabhdas H Adwalia Trophy, for horses in the lowest category, proved as puzzling as expected. Golden Hammer carried strong support but it was the lesser fancied Golden Heart who responded gamely to Yash Narredu`s urgings to get the better of long shot Beyond Stars close home. Golden Hammer had to be content with third.

Confusion reached its peak in the 1200 metres A Geddis Plate, where the drifting odds on Interceptor and the sudden plunge on Marcus left punters performing complicated mental arithmetic. Marcus eventually made a late appearance only to finish off the frame.

For a brief moment it seemed Interceptor had forgotten the script altogether as stablemate Desert Classic stole a useful lead inside the final 100 metres. Then Interceptor suddenly remembered the purpose of the exercise, produced a late flourish, and swept past the tiring leader to win comfortably. Believe finished third.
