Thalassa springs a surprise on eventful opening day
18-Jul-2025: The Pune racing season began on Friday with a card of nine races, featuring a mix of winning favourites, a few upsets, and a false start that caused confusion. The day started well with Lord Eric winning under Trevor Patel, who later rode Fourth Wing to what was a narrow victory. However, the race was later declared void after it was found that not all starting gates had opened together. Despite the starter indicating a false start, the jockeys failed to notice the siren.

Divine Intuition Stuns at 20-1 — Punters Left Praying
25-Jul-2025: In an astonishingly accurate case of name-what-you-want-most, a horse called Divine Intuition won on Friday at the Pune races — and at juicy odds of 20 to 1, no less. One would say divine intuition is exactly what punters need in Pune, where formbooks are often as useful as horoscopes and stables seem to conspire only to confuse.

Predictable Parade Ends with a Blast from the Past
02-Aug-2025: Saturday’s Pune races galloped along with all the suspense of a replay—until an 11-year-old veteran decided he`d had enough of the script. With favourites obligingly doing their job like obedient employees at appraisal time, the day was all set for a clean sweep—until The Flutist decided to rewrite the symphony. The old-timer romped home in the last race and reminding everyone that racing is not meant to be this predictable.

Punters Strike a Dream Alliance with Favourites
03-Aug-2025: For the second day in a row, Pune racing threw punters a bone, and a juicy one at that, with fancied runners mostly holding their ground. Of course, what’s a race day without an upset? Trainer Pradeep Chouhan made sure to stir the pot with Chelsea springing a surprise. But otherwise, the script seemed mostly pre-approved by the betting ring. The feature event, the JSK1 Best Odds Eve Champion Trophy, lived up to its name — especially if you backed Dream Alliance at 5 to 1.

Snowfall Decides to Show Up in Feature
10-Aug-2025: Aman Altaf Hussain’s Snowfall is that infuriatingly gifted who can crush any opposition one day and vanish into mediocrity the next. Brilliant when the mood strikes—and utterly baffling when it doesn’t—she has been responsible for more than a few sleepless nights for jockeys and her former trainer. After a flop in her last handicap outing, she arrived for the Gr 3 Yohan Z Poonawalla Turf Club Trophy in a mood that left the opposition less interested in winning and more in figuring out what on earth just hit them.

King Ke Crowned on Independence Day
15-Aug-2025: Pesi Shroff’s King Ke came to the 2000 metres Teena Katrak Memorial Independence Million with solid preparation. The Multitude gelding had won his last start at Chennai in March and maintained that winning run. In the hands of jockey Vivek G, King Key readily justified the strong support. Apart from Vivek, the trainer and jockey combination of M K Jadhav and N S Parmar had a double for the day.

Fourth Wing Empties Money Bags in Wadia Trophy
16-Aug-2025: Aman Altaf Hussain had every reason to pump his fist after Fourth Wing swooped on the 1400 metres Gr 3 F D Wadia Trophy, the feature event of Saturday’s Pune races. Favourite Money Bags looked poised to collar the front-runner but appeared to have missed a stride at the business end, settling for second best. Fourth Wing, though carrying credentials, was let loose by the odds-makers at 15 to 1 — and duly delivered one of the day’s biggest jolts to the betting ring.

Chagall Returns from Break in Winning Style
24-Aug-2025: Sunday’s card behaved as if scripted by the punters’ union: favourites mostly obliged, but not without making them sweat. At least the contests were close, a welcome relief from the dreary one-horse parades that have crept in lately. Pesi Shroff trained Chagall brought off a fine in the Dr S R Captain Salver, the feature event of Sunday’s races. Pesi Shroff had a double for the day as his other ward Superstar pulled off a narrow win.

Positano Finds His Mojo in Idar Trophy
31-Aug-2025: Sulaiman Attaollahi-trained Positano has finally cultivated the winning habit. A horse who once specialised in running second to just about everyone has now stitched together a hat-trick, the latest being a stylish triumph in the 2400 metres Idar Gold Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, at Pune on Sunday. Of course, it helps when all those who used to beat you are either enjoying long vacations in the paddock or limping around elsewhere.

Time And Tide Staggers, Still Scrapes Through
07-Sep-2025: Niraj Karanjawalla-trained Time And Tide won the 1200 metres Akkasaheb Maharaj Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, but looked anything but invincible. The favourite with 14 wins from 21 starts was expected to cruise, yet Pune remains his bogey track. This time he broke the jinx, though only after Sandesh had to ride like a man possessed to hold off the gallant Magileto in the last stride.

When Racing Becomes a Procession
13-Sep-2025: Saturday’s Pune races served up a one-sided competition, with favourites either strolling home or rivals waving the white flag before the bend, the afternoon felt less like sport and more like a rehearsal gone public. Missing in action were the real stars: horses capable of turning races into contests instead of glorified solo exhibitions.

Baychimo Storms in the Rain
14-Sep-2025: Nirad Karanjawala’s Baychimo thrives on chaos. After drifting across Bangalore’s track to win, he braved Pune’s Gr 3 S A Poonawalla Million in monsoon mayhem. With rain pelting down and mud flying, Anthony Raj launched him clear. Favourite Zacharias wriggled out late but ran out of runway, missing by a neck. Gun Smoke finally remembered to gallop into third, while Ice of Fire fizzled on the soggy ground.

Anthony Raj Rules, Waydande Rises with Treble
21-Sep-2025: The Indian St Leger may have been the day’s feature, but make no mistake—the undercard was set ablaze by jockey Anthony Raj, who swaggered away with three wins, while emerging apprentice Aditya Waydande matched him stride for stride with a treble of his own. Between them, the two made sure the rest of the weighing room looked like mute spectators at their own party.
Odysseus Outsmarts the Pack in Indian St Leger
21-Sep-2025: If sprint races in India are about horsepower, then the long-distance ones are about headpower—except, of course, when most jockeys decide to leave theirs in the weighing room. Endurance races in this country don’t always crown the best horse; they usually crown the one whose jockey doesn’t miscalculate pace. A steady gallop turns into a chess match on legs, and when the plans click, a jockey looks like a genius. When they don’t? Well, then he looks like a passenger who accidentally bought a ticket for the wrong bus.

RWITC Keeps Tradition Alive with Media Day at Pune
27-Sep-2025: It was “Media Day” at Pune—yes, you read that right, the Royal Western India Turf Club actually remembered the media exists. A rare sight, considering most turf clubs treat reporters warmly only until someone dares to ask a question tougher than “How’s the buffet?” Newspaper coverage remains thinner than a jockey on a crash diet, but at least a couple of websites keep punters armed with the essentials.

Sandesh in Command with Five-Win Blitz
04-Oct-2025: Racing these days has misplaced its competitive spark. One-sided affairs are becoming the norm, and though favourites continue to rule the roost, their odds are so miserly that even a single upset leaves punters nursing their losses — a situation worsened by the punitive 40 per cent GST. With expensive entry tickets and little adrenaline left to savour, the ordinary racegoer is left more frustrated than thrilled. It’s time the authorities examined why the sport’s edge is dulling — perhaps the handicapping system needs a rethink to revive excitement and unpredictability.

Derby Eve Racing Runs Short on Spark
11-Oct-2025: The Pune Derby Eve racing unfolded with all the enthusiasm of a rain-soaked picnic. For what’s supposed to be a glittering prelude to the Derby, the card was shockingly thin, the energy flatter than the turf itself. One expects flair and competition on such a weekend, but the club seemed to have misplaced both—offering instead a dreary lineup that left punters wondering if the real Derby spirit had taken the day off.

Zacharias Waltzes Away with Pune Derby
12-Oct-2025: The GR 1 Villoo Poonawalla Pune Derby, the biggest race of the Pune Racing Calendar, promised high drama, but by the end, it turned into a one-horse show starring Zacharias — trained by the unflappable Pesi Shroff, for whom Derby wins are as routine as his morning coffee. For the rest, it was a lesson in how to look busy while getting soundly beaten.

Ataash Awakens from Year-Long Slumber
19-Oct-2025: After 448 days of playing hide-and-seek with victory, Nazak Chenoy-trained Ataash finally remembered her day job and stormed to success in the Dakshin Maharashtra & Goa Sub-Area Trophy, the feature event of Sunday’s Pune races. Dismissed in the betting ring like an old has-been, Ataash turned cheeky under apprentice A Omkar’s featherweight handling, flooring favourite Fighton and proving that even forgotten horses have their day — eventually.

Be Magical serves a Straightforward Finish
24-Oct-2025: Friday’s card at Pune served up a curious cocktail — a dash of excitement, a shot of upsets, and a whole lot of predictable outcomes. Beer Magical lived up to the hype, while a few longshots like Semurg and Looking Like A Wow crashed the punters’ party. With the Pune season nearing its finish line, the day belonged to the favourites — and the occasional rebel who refused to read the script.

Duke of Tuscany wins even as punters suffer blows
02-Nov-2025: The final day of the Pune Season turned into a punters’ demolition derby, with favourites treated like disposable décor and Pesi Shroff once again showing that depth of artillery is better than public sentiment. Duke of Tuscany, previously behaving like a tourist in training tack, suddenly sprang to life and mugged Regina Memorabilis late to hand Pesi the trainer’s title. For punters, it was not a finale, it was a financial post-mortem.
