Akshay Kumar back in his elements

By: Tippu Sultan   December 13 , 2022

Hilton Sequeira trained Soloist was ridden out for an easy win by jockey Akshay Kumar in the 1200 metres Basalath Jah Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 60 to 85, the feature event of Hyderabad races held at Malakpet on Tuesday. Jockey Akshay Kumar was back in his elements booting home a quadruple, two of these winners coming from the stables of trainer Sequeira.

Jockey Abhay Singh was pulled up last time out for not exercising sufficient control on Soloist and had received a stern warning from the Stipes. Soloist if only because of this appeared to enjoy an edge over the others as the run was suggestive despite lackadaisical efforts on the part of the jockey. Soloist who took charge of the proceedings with a ground-saving run along the rails inside the final 300 metres proved superior as she sped clear before the late-charging Kingston could make any dent. The speedy Bedford who was bidding for a hat-trick had the lead coming into the straight but she went a little wide at the final turn which allowed Akshay Kumar to push Soloist in the gap along the rails. Soloist had the speed to take the gap and accelerated well and was beyond the reach of the rest. Kingston came from the clouds to show up on the wide outside and came within reach of overhauling the front-runner but Soloist was safely home by a shade less than a length. Amyra edged out a tiring Bedford to get third place.

Favourite Hugh Capet from the stables of trainer Magan Singh was on target in the 1400 metres Chaitanya Ratham Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, Hugh Capet had to be urged to stay in place midway through the race but once the three-year-old colt got into his rhythm, there was no stopping the favourite. Hugh Capet moved with raking strides, easily overhauled the front-running second favourite Baisa, and bounced clear to win by a widening margin of six lengths. Golden Inzio edged past Baisa close to home to get second place. Pinatubo was a close fourth. The odds quoted on favourite Sweet Dancer drifted out and there was one-sided support for Cyndy Girl in the lower division of the race. The latter ended up as the favourite. True to market expectations, Satheesh trained Cyndy Girl who chased Amalfitana into the straight quickly assumed command in the straight and had enough cushion to go past the post ahead of strongly rallying Miss Marvellous. Sweet Dancer ran on to finish third.

Leo D`Silva trained Huntingdon made an impressive debut in the 1200 metres Nirmal Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds. Huntingdon swept past the field rounding the final turn and sped away for a facile win over favourite NRI Doublepower who was flat-footed when the lesser fancied runner challenged him early in the straight. Queen Empress held off Alexina to save place money.

Akshay Kumar gave a typically patented late dash ride successfully on the fancied Lazarus to snatch the verdict by a neck over favourite Mr Perfect on the post in the Starry Scene Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Mr Perfect who led from the start, stole a march by opening up a lead of over three lengths inside the final furlong when Lazarus began to make his bid from way off the pace, more than six lengths adrift. Mr Perfect was visibly tiring and the powerful driving finish of Akshay Kumar enabled Lazarus to put his neck in front in the nick of time. Unmatched was third.

The biggest upset of the day came in the 1200 metres Palampet Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Favourite Carlisle appeared to be on course having a comfortable lead going into the final furlong. However, a late rally by Morior Invictus from the rear in the hands of jockey Nikhil was so ferocious that the front-runner was quickly overhauled in the shadow of the post. Fancied Briar Ridge did not quicken enough despite being handily placed and had to settle for the third slot.

Faisal Hasan trained Top In Class who had rallied late to be an eye-catching second to Baisa last time out made amends in the 1400 metres Cyndy Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The race had an open look about it, with Royal Grace being more in demand in the betting ring. After Rhythm Selection led the field into the straight, Shazam took charge and led till the final furlong. Top In Class was set alight from the rear of the field by jockey Akshay Kumar and the second favourite moved with raking strides and surged ahead inside the final 100 metres and then resolutely held off the late charge by favourite Royal Grace to prevail by a head. Shazam stayed on finish third.
