Iron Age maintains an amazing run of wins

  February 12 , 2023

Imtiaz Sait trained Iron Age maintained his amazing run of wins, proving that he was invincible over a sprint in Western India by recording his 18th win from 30 outings by annexing the Gr 2 Dr S C Jain Sprinters Championship, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Mumbai races. The eight-year-old has been a model of consistency and maintains his zest.

Iron Age will no doubt head to Bangalore to take part in the Sprinters Cup during the Indian Turf Invitation Cup weekend races in the first week of March. The only thing that he has not accomplished is winning a race outside of Mumbai and Pune, his home centres. Possibly in the form that he is in, he may well achieve that feat.

There has been no emergence of quality sprinters from the younger lot in the last few years. Iron Age has been holding sway for sprint events for a long time. Pesi Shroff trained five-year-old mare Hunting Goddess who had been raced sparingly and achieved a hat-trick of wins, looked the only possible horse from the younger lot who could trouble Iron Age while the erstwhile Sprinters Cup winner Corfe Castle had seen better days finding it hard to win on a consistent basis even at his home centre Hyderabad.

Trevor Patel took Iron Age to the front as is his wont. The Manjri Stud Farm bred son of Strong Suit enjoyed his foray in the front, having an uncontested lead. The only time that Trevor got aggressive was approaching the final furlong when he made use of the whip to ask for more from the favourite who was more than willing to stretch out. Hunting Goddess gave a chase but found Iron Age too good for comfort though the second-placed effort would damage her handicap rating, having finished ahead of 108-rated Corfe Castle. Hunting Goddess went to the race with a rating of 70. Corfe Castle was a well-beaten third. Market King was fourth while Fast Rain, the only other challenger, looked out of depth in this company.

Narendra Lagad trained Son Of A Gun was more at home over the trip of seven furlongs than the six that he essayed last week and won the 1400 metres Bangalore Turf Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, with a measure of comfort. Son Of A Gun had stumbled and was interfered with at the start on the last occasion. Son Of A Gun who was well backed along with Count of Savoy, had a trouble-free run in the front in the hands of apprentice jockey Mustakim Alam who is growing in confidence. The progeny of Top Class was not under pressure to keep his lead and he checked in a shade less than lengths ahead of Count of Savoy who failed to exert pressure on the eventual winner. Flying Visit held off Giant Star to save place money.

Four-year-old filly Swift from the stables of trainer Pesi Shroff had made a smashing winning debut last time out and the quality of that win was such a repeat win was on the cards. Apprentice jockey Kritish Bhagat had the luxury of sitting back and watching all the frenetic action in the front till approaching the final furlong when he alerted the got abroad filly to put her best foot forward. Swift covered the leeway in the manner of a higher-class horse, cruised past those battling in front and won without being extended. Pyrrhus who has made a habit of finishing second best got his fourth runner-up effort by staving off Queens Pride. Swift should continue to win notwithstanding whatever competition that he comes across next time out.

Inamorata was a late rallying second in her last effort last week and now asked to tackle a furlong more, the progeny of Roderic O`Connor made amends by winning the 1600 metres Jayaramdas Patel Gold Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Inamorata assumed command very early in the straight and had no problem in winning from Justin who spoiled all his chances by veering out of a straight course and losing precious ground in the process. The additional equipment that Justin sported did not help as the four-year-old gelding continued with his habit of veering out. Starting close to the rails, Justin, despite all the efforts of jockey Bhawani Singh, ended up on the outer rail. Alpha Domino was a well-beaten third.

Pesi Shroff saddled the third winner of the day when full sister to the well-performed Forest Flame, Reminiscence made a winning debut, swamping the opposition in the 1200 metres N M Irani Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Held back in the early part of the race, Reminiscence scythed through the field with ease to storm clear in the final furlong for an emphatic win. Maysara who led from the start managed to keep the second position from late rallying Golden Glow and Transcend by a whisker.

Faisal Abbas trained Murwara Princess who had run on late from the last position to finish a suggestive third managed in her last effort, duly won the 2000 metres Dr I C Nagree Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. In the hands of apprentice jockey Mustakim Alam, Murwara Princess surged ahead in the centre of the track down the final furlong and held off a strong late rally by Charlie to win by a short head. Zarak was third.

After finishing second best on four consecutive times, Waheed trained Willy Wonka finally had things falling his way in the 2000 metres Amazing Mauritius Cup, a race for horses in the lowest category. Willy Wonka burst out of the pack approaching the final furlong and stormed clear to win by a widening margin of five lengths over Might Wings. Gimme was third.
