Superlative wins Racingpulse Trophy in tight finish

  March 9 , 2023

The RWITC had framed races to honour the contribution of print and digital media by framing races named after these entities. Shiraz Sunderji trained Superlative pulled off a narrow win over Esperanza, Rodrigo and Lord Vader in an absorbing finish under lights at Mahalakshmi on Thursday in the Racingpulse Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. The RWITC faced a piquant issue with the Jockeys Association of India calling a strike in support of their demands. The club went ahead with the racing with the help of apprentice jockeys. Racing was of top order, with form running true in all the races of the day.

The jockeys were protesting against the demand made on those facing the enquiry by the Stipes for providing call details of their mobile phones besides seeking other information which the jockeys deemed private and went on a strike. There was a meeting with the Stewards by the representatives of the JAI before the first race on Thursday and the matter was supposed to have been settled amicably. One is not sure what assurances were given by the Stewards though the talk doing the rounds was that the Stipes continue to reserve the right to summon certain details when they deem it appropriate.

One good thing that came about because of the strike was that apprentices got a chance to ride horses with winning chances. Most of the time, these apprentices rarely get a chance to get a positive ride as many of them who fail to strike early, have to loiter in the background, working more as riding boys. The apprentices proved that they could be as reliable if given the opportunities. Somebody like Gagandeep Manna who hadn`t won for years ended with a double. The results that accrued were far more predictable than when the big jockeys are in the saddle so much so that many were of the view that RWITC should plan some race days only for the apprentice jockeys. This way, they can help many apprentices to get recognition. Unless these people are given chance, many of them end their careers the way they started: in frustration.

Be that as it may, Shazaan Shah trained Esperanza and Karthik Ganapathy`s Lord Vader came in for sustained support with Rodrigo who had a live chance and Superlative being in the betting. In the event, Rodrigo which had Bangalore-based apprentice Alex Rozario held the fort till the dying moments of the race but Esperanza edged ahead close to the post. These two were battling it out all the way in the final furlong but shifted out allowing Superlative to get a fine opening along the rails. Praveen Shinde pushed his mount through the fortuitous opening and enabled the long shot to win by half a length. Lord Vader who met with interference at the start covered enormous ground in the stretch to come within the striking reach of those in front, missing it out narrowly. Lord Vader had the services of the most experienced apprentice Kritish Bhagat.

Imtiaz Sait trained Rasputin looked outstanding in the 2000 metres Indiarace.com Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Experienced Mustakim Alam who is emerging as a jockey of immense potential, had Rasputin take charge early in the straight. The favourite bounced clear to win by a widening margin of nine lengths over Zarak who ran well below expectations. Grand Accord ran on to finish third while Sandman finished a dismal last. Sandman reportedly burst his blood vessels and hence the reason for this poor performance.

Pesi Shroff trained Cordelia was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1400 metres Hindu Cup, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Long shot Supreme Spirit who had finished way ahead of Cordelia when these two had clashed last time out, led all the way in the hands of P S Kaviraj and held off the threat posed by Cordelia with a measure of comfort. Glacier was third while Kinzhal who lost considerable ground at the start ran on to finish fourth.

In a thrilling finish, Rehanullah Khan trained Outlander pulled off a win by a whisker over Queen`s Pride in the 1000 metres Mid-Day Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Both these horses had the form and were well backed and shared favouritism. Queen`s Pride looked the likely winner as she led all the way in the straight but apprentice jockey Haridas Gore managed to get Outlander to snatch a last-stride win. Trinket was third.

Gagandeep Mann had a double for the day as he guided Shiraz Sunderji trained Midsummer Star for an easy win over well-backed Attained in the 1200 metres Free Press Journal Cup, a race for horses in the lowest category. Midsummer Star quickly seized the initiative on turning for home and established a big cushion which proved to be a winning one. Attained managed to head Champagne Smile to get the runner-up berth.

There were three horses which attracted betting in equal measure in the 1400 metres Race Mirror Trophy (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Altaf Hussain trained Mount Sinai, who was in serious betting, snatched the lead on turning for home, and broke clear for a facile win over Between Friends and the well-backed Lion King.

Subhag Singh trained Marlboro Man pulled off a win at nourishing odds in the 1400 metres Times of India Cup, a race for horses in the lowest category. Gagandeep Manna pushed Marlboro Man to establish a winning lead approaching the final furlong. The long shot easily held off the late charge by Dagger`s Strike. Fancied Shadows who led from the start conceded the lead in the final furlong but held on grimly to save place money in a three-horse fight.
