Mireya justifies expectations with a gutsy win

By: Tippu Sultan   December 25 , 2023

Trained by Sandeep, Mireya, ridden by apprentice jockey Ajay Kumar, secured a narrow victory in the 1400 meters Wanaparthy Cup, the featured race for horses rated 40 to 65 at Malakpet on Monday. Favourite Mireya faced tough competition from It`s On and Sun Dancer in the final furlong. However, a strong finish by Mireya allowed the horse to prevail by a neck at the finish line.

It`s On and Sun Dancer took the lead in the final furlong, creating a challenging scenario for the public fancy who had some leeway to make up. Nevertheless, Mireya, under the skilful guidance of Ajay Kumar, exhibited a powerful surge to claim victory. Sun Dancer secured the second position by a narrow margin in the concluding stride, edging out It`s On. Fly To The Stars ran on late to be a noteworthy fourth.

The race featured a competitive finish involving the top three market fancies, providing spectators with an exciting and closely contested event. Apprentice jockey Ajay Kumar`s consistent performance was rewarded with a commendable win.

Ananth Vatsalya, the trainer of D Yes Boss, displayed confidence in his horse as it competed in the 1400 meters Kuntala Plate, a race designed for horses rated 20 to 45. The odds-on favourite, three-year-old filly Miracle Mary, expanded which indicated a lack of confidence in the favourite to be seen in serious business. Gathering significant attention in the betting market, the five-year-old mare D Yes Boss emerged as a standout choice based on betting trends.

During the race, Sucker Punch took the early lead, while D Yes Boss, under the guidance of jockey Ashad Asbar, was held back in the rear position alongside Golden Inzio. Despite taking a wide turn and losing some ground, the five-year-old mare showcased her superior talents, covering the distance with powerful strides. By the final furlong, D Yes Boss had seized control of the race, ultimately winning by a substantial margin of over four lengths.

Bold Beauty, a contender with some support in the betting ring, secured the second position, surpassing the pace-setting stablemate Sucker Punch, who finished third. The dominance of D Yes Boss in the race highlighted the significance of both strategic planning and the trainer`s conviction in the horse`s capabilities based on the assessment of the opposition she was contending with.

Trainer Prasad Raju`s horse, Sangreal, entered the post for the 1100 meters Aristocrat Plate (Div I) with limited support in the betting ring. Despite the lack of popularity among bettors, Sangreal showcased a powerful finish, overtaking the long-time leader, OK Boss, in the final strides of the race to secure victory.

In the lower division of the Aristocrat Plate, B Mukesh Kumar`s trainee, Calista Girl, made the race look like easy pickings. Guided by apprentice jockey Shivansh, Calista Girl lived up to expectations and fulfilled the hopes of her backers. Calista Girl took command right from the start, providing no anxious moments to her supporters, and maintained a comfortable lead to the finish line.

Cosmico made a late surge to secure the second spot in the race, displaying a strong finish ahead of Shadow Fax. Calista Girl`s dominant performance was highly satisfying for supporters who backed the horse with conviction.

The race, designed for horses rated 20 to 45, had no clear favourite, as three horses received equal support from the betting community. OK Boss, coming off a previous win where it led from the front, employed similar tactics in this race and nearly succeeded. However, Sangreal, with a late surge, managed to surpass the tiring front-runner just before the post, achieving the desired result for the long shot.

In the closely contested finish, Silver Act made a late charge and edged out OK Boss to claim the runner-up position by a whisker. The initially fancied Crimson Rose, who had been in pursuit of the front-runner until the final furlong, faded under pressure and could not maintain its position. Sangreal`s victory reflected the unpredictability of horse racing at this centre where the underdog keeps depleting the purse of the unsuspecting punters.

In the Trade Fair Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, B Mukesh Kumar`s trainee, The Thunder, showcased an aggressive front-running style, successfully fending off a spirited challenge from Cabello to claim victory. The dynamics of odds drift, often indicative of race outcomes in Malakpet, played a significant role in this event. Maverick, the pre-race favourite, experienced a notable expansion in odds, with four horses being closely matched in terms of betting support.

Despite not having secured a win in a year, The Thunder, ridden by jockey Ashad Asbar, took the lead and, despite appearing vulnerable throughout the race, managed to withstand a powerful surge from the rank outsider, Cabello. The Thunder ultimately secured victory by a neck, with Bangor On Dee finishing in third place.

Maverick, initially positioned well and keeping pace with the front-runner until the final stretch, gradually lost momentum and faded out of contention faster than expected.

In the 2000 meters Hussain Sagar Cup, apprentice Kuldeep Singh guided the relatively less fancied Alpine Girl, hailing from trainer Jasbir Singh`s stables, to a comfortable victory. Caraxes took the lead from the beginning and maintained it into the stretch until the final furlong, fending off a strong challenge from Voice of A Dream.

However, the dynamics of the race shifted dramatically when Alpine Girl, positioned around sixth place at the final turn, unleashed a powerful acceleration with significant strides. Alpine Girl swiftly covered ground and easily surpassed the battling front-runners in the last 100 meters, securing an impressive win with a substantial margin of five lengths. Notably, the victory was achieved in a record time of two minutes and 32.6 seconds. Voice of A Dream managed to edge out the long-time leader in the final stride, securing the second position.

Apprentice jockey Ajay Kumar continued to shine as he guided the long shot Precious Gift, trained by Prasad Raju, to an unexpected victory in the 1100 meters Aristocrat Plate (Div III). The race was designed for horses rated 20 to 45, and despite the heavy backing for Netto trained Hard To Toss, the favourite, ridden by Imran Khan, failed to live up to expectations.

Hard To Toss, backed by significant support, was never in contention, displaying a disappointing performance. Ambitious Star took an early lead and held it deep into the final furlong. Precious Gift and Saint Emilion finished strongly, with Precious Gift managing to prevail by a neck at the end, leaving Ambitious Star to finish third as it weakened in the final stretch.

The victory of Precious Gift considered a long shot, showcased the unpredictability of the well-backed horses biting the dust more often than not. The unexpected outcomes in races often highlight the influence of various factors on race results which is what the Stipes are tasked with to deal with.
