Dapper Look prevails in Alcock Arabian Million

By: Tippu Sultan   February 18 , 2024

Bharath Singh-trained Kalki delivered a shockingly lacklustre performance in the 1400 meters Gr 3 Deccan Bookmakers Welfare Association Alcock Arabian Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the highlight of Sunday`s Hyderabad races held at Malakpet. The competition evolved into a fierce duel between Satheesh-trained Dapper Look and King Immortal from Vittal Deshmukh`s stables, with Dapper Look clinching victory at the last moment. Kalki, despite a stunning win in the previous race, trailed by more than six lengths behind the winner.

Kalki had dominated the field in the last race and was anticipated to continue the winning streak against seemingly modest competition. However, Kalki, leading from the start, faltered when challenged by Dapper Look in the final stretch, displaying signs of distress and ultimately conceding defeat. Debutant King Immortal exhibited remarkable speed, mounting a strong challenge along the rails. Nevertheless, Dapper Look`s prior race experience proved decisive, securing a narrow victory. Kalki`s inconsistency raises questions about his performance.

Hilton Sequeira`s Miss Maya suffered a third consecutive loss by a narrow margin, yielding to bottom-weighted Wind Sprite in the 1200 meters MCEME Rolling Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Despite seeming poised for victory, Miss Maya`s bid was thwarted by Wind Sprite in the final furlong, who clinched the win by a slim margin. The weight disadvantage heavily impacted Miss Maya`s performance, with Colt Pistol finishing third. Midsummer Star, heavily backed, failed to deliver as expected due to being outpaced. In the lower division, Leo D`Silva-trained Malibu seized the lead in the final furlong, fending off a late challenge from Tripurari to secure victory, with Pontefract finishing third. Kenna, despite strong support, faltered in the straight after leading the field and finished last.

G Sandeep-trained Mireya continued her impressive form, securing her fourth consecutive win of the season in the 1600 meters Raj Bahadur Venkatarama Reddy Memorial Cup (Div I), fending off a challenge from NRI Sport to emerge victorious. Great Guns, trained by Prasad Raju, comfortably won the lower division, asserting dominance over Ivanhoe and Icicle in the final furlong.

Leo D`Silva, a dominant force in the trainers` championship, appears poised to reclaim the title. Glorious Power, from his stables, dominated the 1100 meters Sea Bird Plate for maiden three-year-olds, winning by a significant margin.

Trainer Satheesh`s horses often exhibit unpredictable performances, particularly when leading uncontested. London Bell, a long shot, comfortably led the pack and held off Tortilla Chip`s late surge in the 1800 meters Dream Girl Plate.

Hurricane Bay, heavily backed from Leo D`Silva`s stables, surged ahead in the final furlong to win the 1400 meters Sir Bruce Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, dashing the hopes of Antidote and Deccan Ranger.
