Pierre Ng confident Sagacious Life can bounce back in BMW Hong Kong Derby

By: Declan Schuster   March 18 , 2026

Trainer Pierre Ng is keeping the faith when Sagacious Life contests the HK$26 million 149th BMW Hong Kong Derby (2000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon (22 March).

After awkwardly covering ground from an outside draw when fourth in the HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) before failing to fire a shot in the HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) last start on 1 March, Sagacious Life is aiming to bounce back to the sort of form that saw him win two Class 2s in his first three Hong Kong starts.

The chestnut, who won the 2024 G1 Derby Paulista (2400m) in Brazil pre-import, raced keenly in a midfield position in the Hong Kong Classic Cup, and subsequently ran out of clear running room before eventually dropping out to last place, all while the rampaging Stormy Grove surged to victory from near-last on the home turn.

Owned by Leslie Lui, Sagacious Life tuned up over 1700m in a recent turf barrier trial, finishing second to a runaway Supreme Mastermind in 1m 52.35s (37.2, 26.4, 26.4, 22.3).

Ng said: “Since the Classic Cup, he`s pulled up well. He had a very unlucky run last start, so we gave him a trial at Happy Valley last Saturday (14 March). He did everything right; Karis (Teetan) is happy with him and he`s been doing most of his work. We`re pretty much ready for Sunday and let`s see what we draw.”

Ng, the winner of 18 races this season, believes Thursday`s (19 March) barrier allocation will be crucial as his 97-rated galloper aims to dispel any queries regarding his promising trajectory.

“It all depends on the draw (regarding where the horse settles in the run). Since his last race we know that he can over-race, so I think we`ll preserve him,” Ng said.

Little Paradise tops the BMW Hong Kong Derby line-up, rated 103, ahead of Numbers (100), Stormy Grove (98), Invincible Ibis (94), Patch Of Cosmo (89), Beauty Bolt (88), Emblazon (88), Top Dragon (87), Regal Gem (85), Juneau Pride (81), Dazzling Fit (80), Seraph Gabriel (79) and Pope Cody (76).

Looking to Hong Kong`s flagship spring fixture – worth HK$78 million in prizemoney across three Group 1 races – 2026 FWD Champions Day, Ng is pleased with Galaxy Patch as he chases an elusive elite-level crown with the six-year-old son of Wandjina.

“He`s doing really well. He had an easy trial, so he`ll have one more trial before he runs in the Chairman`s Trophy (G2, 1600m) on 6 April. Following that, we`ll go to the 26th of April – the big day – for the FWD Champions Mile (G1, 1600m),” Ng said.

Trainer Jimmy Ting is searching for a second win with Toronado gelding Golden Friendship (121lb) when the four-year-old features in Wednesday night`s (18 March) Class 4 Bellflower Handicap (1000m) at Happy Valley.

“I think draw one is a good draw for him. He needs a good gate to help him. I`d like to ask the jockey to lead, but I think Tony Cruz`s horse (Parents` Love) is faster than my one – maybe we`ll get the box seat,” Ting said.

Undefeated talent Hot Delight – who has drawn comparisons to former champion Golden Sixty at this stage of his career – is entered this Sunday at Sha Tin for trainer Francis Lui, while 2025 Hong Kong Classic Cup hero Rubylot is also entered for the 1400m Class 2.

Ahead of Sunday`s BMW Hong Kong Derby, Ng saddles Aestheticism, Watch This One and I Can at the city circuit`s nine-race fixture tonight, which begins at 6.40pm with the Class 5 Aster Handicap (1650m).
